Any hope for weight loss after Effexor?

Posted by EndOfRainbow on March 15, 2005, at 20:34:32

I have read almost every posting on this site - all the ones about Effexor I think. Thank you to everyone for their amazingly candid stories. It is what has lead me to where I am right now - 3 days after my last dose of Effexor. I have been tapering off for about 3 weeks now from 150mg. Until today, I haven't had one side effect. I thought I might be the lucky one, but that was wishful thinking. Definitely loaded with dizziness, headaches and crying more than I care to.

Anyhow, I gained a good 30 pounds while taking this wonderful medicine. Most interesting to me is that for the past 4 months I have been working out for 5+ days a week. How I can continue to gain weight under those circumstances is truly a mystery to me - but I'm pretty sure Effexor is the culprit. Has anyone out there lost their gained weight after going off this medicine? If so, how long before it starts to go bye bye? I'm sooooo over it.

What it is so frustrating is that I was taking Effexor for depression, and nothing makes me more depressed than being fat. How ironic. Any info or personal stories you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There,

I don't really know, hopefully someone else will have more experience, but that sounds so frustrating. I would guess that you will have to really work to get the weight off but that it will come off eventually. You will probably lose a little to begin with and then it will be just getting off what you gained. Good luck with it, I hope the side effects go away soon! And Welcome to babble!

Take care
Rain

When I stopped Effexor XR, I lost most of the weight I'd gained while on it without even noticing! I didn't change anything, and only noticed the weight loss when I "accidentally" stepped on a scale. I gained a whole lot more than 30 pounds, though: over 50!

(By the way, I'm anorexic -- so the weight gain was a tiny problem for me, too!)
