Remeron poop out

Posted by hffcookie on March 15, 2005, at 1:01:30

Hello

Has anyone had experience with Remeron (or any other AD) working wonderfully for like, a week, and then just not working at all anymore? The thing is I was on SolTabs for 2 weeks, had the greatest momentary lift from this depression, ran out of tabs and went dry (on Effexor as well) for about a week and then started generic. Well, it's been a couple weeks now and I just don't have the same efficacy that I did before. In fact, I am in an almost darker depression now....

Thanks,
h

hey! Its been known to happen...a pill works well, then stops working...or you stop taking it, take it again, and nothing. I don't think it has anything to do with the meds being generic/brand..it seems to be the nature of the beast. Sometimes, I've gotten effects back by getting the dosage upped, but you also have to know when to stop with this approach and move on to other meds (if you go up too much, you're likely to get lots of side-effects and few real benefits). A "booster" can help, too...since you're doing "California Rocket Fuel," the only thing I can think of to add to the remeron+effexor mix would be wellbutrin...or a stimulant (most docs seem to RX low-dose Ritalin for depression, but I think dexedrine or Adderall work better). Provigil and Straterra supposedly help much in the same way as stimulants...if you have a choice, I'd opt for Provigil. If all else fails, you may want to replace 1 or both meds...Effexor could easily be replaced by a Tricyclic, since it is the most Tricyclic-esque of the "new" anti-depressants. Add a dopamine-booster, like higher-end wellbutrin or some kind of stimulant, and things could work nicely with that. Remeron would be harder to replace, since it is a "novel" med. I think the tetracyclic mianserin might be worth a try. Good luck!

Thanks so much! I actually am on adderall (40 to 60mg a day) as well... I see my pdoc tomorrow and may talk to her about going to 45mg of remeron... Thanks again for the great info... I was wondering, is there anything known as being a better "happy" drug than Remeron? Although I am getting through each day, it would be pretty cool to feel happy just to be happy. For a long time I assumed that being 'not-completely-in-the-trash-can-depressed' was enough, but i would love to be happy, stupid happy, head in the clouds even a little ditsy happy...anyway, any suggestions would be so appreciated....best to you and thanks again!

Remeron is a "happy drug"? It just shows how different all our body chemistry is. I'm not sure the l5mg of remeron even helped me sleep, just gain wt. Fondly, Phillipa

The common sense thing to do is to raise the dosage of Remeron. It is not uncommon for a generic not to be bioequivelant to the original preparation. You have nothing to lose.

I was taking Remeron for about 3-4 months, when it pooped out after I had gone from 30-60 mg/day, leaving me in a black hole of depression once again. Knowing that this could happen was almost as scary as the depression itself.
