need help - what happens if i go to the hospital?

Posted by hffcookie on March 14, 2005, at 15:18:04

Hi

Can anyone tell me what happens if you check yourself into the emergency room? I am not suicidal at the moment but have been experiencing an increasing overwhelming depression that my meds (remeron and effexor) have not been helping to relieve. my shrink is not very good and does not respond to after hour calls 9 out of 10 times and i am on the "search" for someone else but even that is overwhelming. i cannot follow through with appt's and, at times, become completely overwhelmed with sadness and an almost sufocating kind of grief. i need help and think checking myself into a facility might be a good place to go but i don't want to freak myself out and make it worse...does anyone have any advice? thanks.

holly

Holly. What you are going through sounds intense. A couple things come to mind for you.. first, the ER will probably give you a shot of valium or ativan and refer you to a different facility. If you openly discuss your suicidal ideation with the medical professionals, they may initiate a 51-50 (72 hour mandatory hold at a different facility), which may not be a bad choice for you. If this is something that you decide to do, I suggest that you bring the meds that you are currently taking with you. Sometimes it takes up to 48 hours to see a psychiatrist once you are admitted.

Above all else, hang in there and be good to yourself. This stuff is overwhelming, I know.

I'm sorry your meds aren't working. I concur with the above poster. Fondly, Phillipa

Thanks for the info. Still not sure what to do but appreciate knowing what a hospital stay intails a bit more...the mood really drops at night when i'm "coming down" from my adderall that i've been on as well for 2 plus years. sometimes this can just get overwhelming, this sadness just appears and sort of cloaks me, weighs me down, and it can make me feel very isolated and alone... so I thank you for your kind words and support.

best to you...

holly.
