Anhedonia/Dysthymia

Posted by cliffstone on March 14, 2005, at 14:50:32

I´m suffering from a mild chronic depression which was diagnosed as dysthymia. I call it anhedonia and it involves the lack of pleasure, low motivation, fatigue, low self esteem and and social anxiety.

After I stopped taking my blood pressure medicine and controlled the blood pressure by regular exercise it certainly got better but the feeling of emptyness remains. Amisulpride and Mirapex gave me an initial boost but pooped out after a few days. Since I´ve heard that this can happen with amisulpride I gave it a shot again and have been taken it now for two and a half weeks with – if any – very limited results.

I would appreciate any input on how long it takes for the Ami to kick in or if other treatment options should be considered.

How about Sellegiline? (hope thats spelt right)

Apparently thats supposed to work well for dysimphia, it didn't do much for me, but then amisulpride did absolutely nothing for me.

Thanks for your post. At what dose were to taking the selegeline. I´m a bit scared about the MAO related side effects.

Hi, I was prescribed Efexor-XR for my Dysthymia around 2.5 years ago. The drug worked well for me but withdrawal was "unatrractive", but would do it a lot different next-time with 20/20 hindsight.

Good luck!

I found it helpful in doses fromg 10mg to 30mg

At 10mgs its selective for MAO B, and there is little danger of interactions.

It was more helpful at high doses unsuprisingly!

As long as your careful I shouldn't think high doses will pose much of a problem.
Just observe all the MAOI diatry restrictions, especially anything containing ephedrine.

Thanks for your support. If the amisupride trial fails I might switch to segeline. Could you tell me how long it took for the selegeline to kick in. Thanks

I felt a benefit almost imidietly in terms of mood, I'm not sure how effective segeline would be long term though.

It certainly didn't help as much as Dexedrine for motivation, although it did help.

Apologies for spelling, am dyslexic
