Tongue sores

Posted by Nikita on March 9, 2005, at 7:47:33

I had to quit taking Gabitril as a mood stabilizer, which was working pretty well, because I kept getting sores on my tongue. You know like when you get an inflammed taste bud but much more painful?? Now I'm on Zonegran, 50mg, and it's working even better. But I've got the tongue sores again. Anyone else with this problem? It's so frustrating. Guess I could lower the Zonegran dose back to 25mg which was working o.k. and hadn't had any sores at that point. Any way to make the sores feel better? They really hurt!

I take Cymbalta (60 mg) and Lexapro (10 mg). I also have gotton some really nasty, painfull and long lasting tongue sores. Of course, there is no way for me to know if my meds caused them.

Ambasol (sp?) works great. It somes in a liquid and in a paste, but the liquid works better.

I have had a problem with sores in my mouth for as long as I can remember. Nothing that I did seemed to help - until I started taking a glyconutritional product. I didn't start taking it for that purpose; however, after I had been taking it for a few months, I suddenly realized that I wasn't suffering with those horrible sores anymore! I guess this really belongs on the alternative board?

I don't know much about the drugs that you are taking but I do know that sometimes the withdrawal or addition of a drug may make you grind your teeth at night. It can also cause you to "chew" (I know it's sick) on the side of your mouth and your tongue thus causing sores. This probably isn't the case for you but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Hi,

>No blood count...why?

Very occasionally, Zonegran can decrease the number of white blood cells, putting you at risk of infection. One symptom of this may be sores in the mouth.

I've always had problems on and off in life with these soars.

I notice if I stay away from chocolate and anything too acidic, I do much better.

I've also been prone (even as an adult) to get thrush in my mouth. Talking about painful!!!! OUCH.

I had mouth sores from several meds. Then I began using vitamin B 12 and they went away.

If they don't go away I'd suggest you ask your doc for the following blood tests:

Serum B 12 and Folate, homocysteine, and metylmalonic acid.
