The Topamax Weight Effect: One Time Offer??

Posted by D minor on March 13, 2005, at 22:25:54

Hey,
I read at "crazymeds.org" that if you take Topamax, then stop it, then start it again you won't lose weight the second time. In other words, the weight loss effect is a one time offer only. Has anyone found this to be true or untrue?

Thanks,
dm

That's funny, but depressing. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi:
I never took the Topamax, however most of psycho.meds., ... a second time around its effectiveness seems to fade away. However, this theory seems to all depend on 'time'/length of discontinuation. For example, you tapered off of it more than three months, then its efficacy might NOT be to your expectaion. However, if it did happen within a month or so, then it might be as effective as before.

For me, I did taper off of Trazodone 200 mg. due to 'drowsy' feelings lasted next day. However, I went it back within one month because of good efficacy on my depression. Its efficacy didn't cease and actually has been working on me as good as before.

Probably, ... first of all, try Topamax whether it still works as good as the first time when you took.
H.G.

I don't know about that. My daughter stopped taking it and gained a few pounds....when she started back up again, the weight she had gained seemed to come off again. Maybe someone else will see this post and give another opinion for you. This is interesting. -L

that's interesting... i'd love to know the answer if you find out. i've heard of mood stabilizers like lithium working less well with each time you go off the med, so the incentive is to stay on the drug. regarding appetite supression, though, i would think that time away from the drug would make it more effective in that aspect since weight loss is a side effect and side effects are more noticable when you first start something. the stimulants come to mind. when i first started adderall, it killed my appetite, and i lost weight, but as i got used to it, the appetite suppression diminished, and the weight loss stopped. if i take a medication holiday and then take adderall again after some time away, it feels a lot stronger, especially in the appetite and weight department.
i've never been on topomax, though, and i don't know anything about your question. i'm just as curious as everyone else if anyone has experiences to share.

This is the end of the thread.
