Yet another question... NEurontin

Posted by Spriggy on February 24, 2005, at 12:59:15

You people just amaze me with all your information and resources so I may forever be here picking your brains!

I find it interesting that "we" supposedly have these mental health issues and yet seem to be smarter than the doctor's. ROFL

Okay, so the question of the hour is.....

Pdoc said no SSRI's (mentioned that before, yes I know), he said, " possibly Cymbalta for you" and then he said, " Maybe even we could try neurontin."

Why in the world would I be prescribed neurontin?

My father takes it for diabetic neuropathy.

I have anxiety and depression. how would it help me?

It's structure is like that of GABA, although it is not thought to really regulate or modulate GABA. It's exact action isn't known - which is true of more meds than we probably realize. The GABA system in the brain is part of the "flight or fight" response that's overactive in persons with anxiety difficulties - or that's the theory. That system can also be a factor in neurogenic pain.

So... in psych usage, it's more helpful for anxiety. But again, it's a question of the chicken or the egg for cause - depression leading to anxiety, anxiety leading to depression, both equally problematic? Do they both need treatment or will taking care of one take care of the other?

How are you feeling today?

I wonder why they have never tried a mood stabilizer in me instead of the AD's and benzos, or in conjunction with. Hope you're better Spriggy. Fondly, Phillipa
