Added Inderal (propanolol) to Cymbalta

Posted by partlycloudy on February 24, 2005, at 7:13:23

I'm on 30mg of Cymbalta and my blood pressure has been high (145/100) even at this minimum dose. I've felt such a benefit in my mood, though, that I don't really want to try yet another medication just yet. It hasn't helped much with anxiety, though, so I've been taking .25mg of xanax as needed, and I don't actually like it. The stuff works fast, but when it wears off you're back where you started. So...
Yesterday my p-doc had me add 20mg of propanolol for the high blood pressure, to combat anxiety, and my migraines, which have increased slightly in frequency. I'm hoping this triple whammy helps.

Hi PC.

That's a pretty smart choice by your doctor. Good luck with it!

I feel so smug - I suggested it to her from reading up on it :) here and elsewhere.
Fingers crossed.

Our experiences sound similar, except for the anxiety. Cymbalta at 60mg was helping my depression AND anxiety, but my BP shot up (it had always been normal before), so we've lowered my dose to 40mg. So far, my mood is good, my anxiety up a smidgen, but manageable. But I haven't noticed a big change in my BP either, so I added extra potassium to my daily supplements. Gonna give it a week or two and if THAT doesn't work I might try Coenzyme Q10. Have you tried any of these? I'm trying hard not to get another prescription! (In addition to Cymbalta, I'm on Trileptal and Zocor, and I may add Bupropion if my motivation doesn't continue to improve.)

Here's a good article about potassium and blood pressure. It looks like you should not take potassium supplements if you're taking beta blockers, but it's OK to eat potassium rich foods like peaches (fresh or dried), potatoes, wheat germ, soy beans and flour, kidney beans, fruit juices (esp. OJ), bananas, and endive.

Hi PartyCloud (*smile*),

I've been on Inderal LA for a year now...for the same reasons as you. Meds cause either my heart rate to skyrocket or my blood pressure to stay consistently high (where I can actually feel it). And, of course, our lovely friend named ANXIETY.

I take 80mg twice a day...once when I get up, and once close to bedtime.

If you don't get much relief from 20mg, I'd ask your doctor for an increase. It's used for migraines at about 200mg per day....so you've got a lot of room to experiment.

And, yes....I had to suggest this med to my doctor as well. Does it seem right that the patient is the ONLY one doing the research?? *wink*

Take care, hon!!!

Sandy

Try nadolol (corgard), it could have less side effects.
