Yes the world has gone completely f**king mad, not that it was ever any other way. Whatever happened to regular walks and play, healthy diet and lots of love. We choose to take this crap, dogs can't.

This is true. Before my 17yr old dog Brandy died he had been on valium because he was blind, deaf, and they said Alzheimers. I now look back, and wonder what I did to him just because I loved him too much to let him die. My poor baby. Now, I'm really depressed. Fondly, Phillipa

I think that was a legitimate question to start the thread. And we really don't know the circumstances.

Thanks,

My dog takes Prozac because he was abused as a puppy and was in various homes before we adopted him. He was a resue Corgi, and has many issues. One is spinning and seperation anxiety. It has helped with his compusivness with licking everyone, and the spinning. He is also not as frienghtend during rain and thunderstorms, and that's a MAJOR progress. He used to hide under the bed for the entire day when it rained. Sometimes when I think it's not helping all that much, I think back and realize that it has calmed him down and he deals with things much better taking it than not. I hope this helps. Oh, He takes 15mg sometimes 20mg and weighs about 25lbs -L

Veterinary standards are .25-.50 mg/lb. So, that would work out to 4-8 mg, and 5-10 mg, respectively. To obtain accurate doses, pediatric liquid Prozac is available.

Best,

My imperfect memory seems to recall that there is actually a veterinary preparation of selegiline designed specifically for depression.

Just like with people, you need to have your pets checked out to make sure that they are in good health and can take a drug. Also then you can be sure about the dose. Please do it for them?

That's what people say about us humans as well remember. "Just snap out of it... go for a walk, have some fun, get a good meal in ya and you'll feel better." :)

When my beloved golden retriever turned 11 she started to show signs of senility. One of her main problems though that when she sensed we were going to go out (and leave her alone in the house) she had a panic attack and would shake and drool. THE VET prescribed amitriptyline ... it worked like a charm. She lived to be 14.

We have to take care of our pets, especially since pets are therapy.

Don't beat yourself up, putting a pet down is one of the hardest things to do. Sometimes at night I can't help thinking about putting my dog down, it's like a horrible video in my head. At the time I thought I should be there for her but now I wish I hadn't. I can't trust people who don't like animals.

That is something your vet would know. Please dont try to self-medicate your pets...BTW, those are some chubby min-pin's! Mine is about 10 lbs. Maybe a change in their diet and some exercise will help along with the medication.
