Okay, this is the last time I am going to bother all of you with my med issues {at least for now!}. But, this is a very old drug, so old that it is very hard to find anything out about it except it is used with babies, and surgical proceedures now. I've tried Web sites and haven't been able to find out anything about weaning off of it after 8years. Any ideas? I'm down to 3cc from l0-20 a couple of weeks ago. Is this to fast or too slow? Only in your opinion of course. Thanks, Phillipa

Phillipa - You are not bothering anyone. If that were the case, then technically we would all be bothering each other and no one would post and the board would not exist.
I have used Chloral Hydrate. Sometimes it is best to go by how you feel. For example, if you were going to fast (never worry about going too slow) you would feel sick or have some side-effect so you would slow it down. If you feel okay at the rate you are going now, then stick with it. When I came off it, I was stuck at 2 cc for a long time (several weeks) and then several weeks at 1 cc. But that was my body. I could not sleep without it and nothing else would work.
How many drugs are weaning off of at the moment? Because that is going to be an issue as well.
Continue to listen to your body. It speaks to us if we take the time to listen (okay hearing voices is not good, but you know what I mean).
You are so courageous to be coming off so many meds and taking control of YOU. I am very impressed!
Keep up the great work!

Thanks SOOOmuch for answering! I was beginning to think I was the only one in the world who had taken this drug! I have a limited supply of this drug, and no more will be rx'd, so I have to watch it. Technically, I should be off it now according to rx, but I would be stupid, still twitching of muscles, etc. Klonopin down to .5mg from 2mg., xanax added at l.5mg nighttime, and .25 am. I know, it's short acting, my fault for telling the pdoc in hospital it made me sleepy. You are so caring taking the time to respond when according to your Posts, you are feeling very depressed. I think you are the courageous one! Fondly, Phillipa

If I can help people it makes me feel better. Like I have something to contribute because right now I feel like such a burden and I am very suicidal.
The clonazapam is hard to come off. I used it as a mood stabiliser. But one time I took an OD (500 mg) and then I changed pdocs and he wanted me off it because I had OD'd on it. When I got down to .25 I had to take that for about a month. Then it was .25 every second night for another month then every third night for another month and I stopped.
Ironically I had to start it again because no one realised that it very good mood stabiliser for me. I now take 4 mg at night. I hope you have an easier time than I did. Oh and in case you are wondering how I obtained 500 mg ... I was hording them in preparation for my attempt. A very futile attempt.

Phillipa, I found a support forum for people going through benzo withdrawal. You might find it useful.
http://www.benzoforum.org/forum/
Keep in mind that the person who created this forum is very against benzos so the support may tainted.

Cloral Hydrate IS a very old drug. This was what they put in victims drinks in the bars and speakeasies to knock them out, the old Mickey Finn they called it.
Although withdrawl can be dangerous as far as dying from a seizure, you sound as if you are doing as well as expected. Just keep track of what you are doing and how you feel.
The psycological withdrawl is the hardest part really, just be aware of your mood swings, jumping muscles, and aches and pains. they are mostly psycological, being aware of this and realizing it will pass is half the key to success.
I would expect to be quite squirrely for a month or so.
This sleep med and benzos would have affected your sleep as far as REM and the like. You should expect very vivid dreams.good luck, med vacations are usually a good thing... there's no better way to see how you're really doing.

I wish I were dreaming, but I'm not. Just being constantly awakened by my husband snoring and the muscles twitching. Talked to pdoc today and she is unconcerned with my W/D symptoms. Just said to stop xanax and take another ambien if I wake up instead. I'll bet she never felt this way! Thanks for your info and support. This chloral hydrate thing makes me the most anxious. It's always been my crutch so to speak. Fondly, Phillipa

I've been on Chloral Hydrate a couple of different times. It only comes in a syrup form that you dilute in water. The dose for me was 500mg-1000mg. To tell you the truth it didn't help much. I guess I've got stubborn insomnia. But from what I know it wears of pretty quickly and doesn't have many side effects - at least it didn't for me.
Hope this helps.
