SEROQUEL/WEIGHT GAIN/APPETITE

Posted by ace on February 1, 2005, at 23:31:08

Can Seroquel increase appetite but have no effect on weight...ie we all know people who eat lots but are still really thin....

is Zyprexa weight gain due not so much to the increased food intake, but rather the slowing down of catabolic (breaking down molecules of food with enzymes) processes within the digestive system?

Thanks folks!!!!!!!!!!

i don't wanna be a fat man!

hey! Apparently, nobody knows just what it is that causes the zyprexa weight gain. My old psychiatrist claimed it was appetite increase, but I gained weight steadily while reducing my intake. Seroquel was hellish for me and I lost a little weight, but I imagine in this regard it'd be like any other appetite-stimulating drug; if you eat more than you use, in terms of calories, you'll eventually gain weight. If this proves problematic, some docs will co-prescribe a weight loss agent such as Meridia when deemed appropriate, but I think this is much more common with zyprexa patients (and still not at all that common). Good luck!

I wonder if the increased need to eat more often is because zyprexa and seroquel are both medications that, in addition to other receptors, block certain dopamine receptors. I think that may have had something to do with my own experience with these meds where I was always unmotivated, groggy, anhedonic, and willing to do anything slightly pleasurable to excess, like eating.

hey ace,
my baseline state is as one of those skinny girls who stuff their faces but don't get fat. when i was on zyprexa, though, i gained about 4 pounds a week. even though i was eating a lot, that doesn't explain how i could gain so much weight, so i think there is something to say about the drug messing up metabolism. i'm not sure whether i can make a direct connection with seroquel or not, but when i was on a dose of between 50 and 100mg recently, my appetite was huge, and i ate more than usual without feeling full. i think that even with all that, i didn't gain weight or gained very little weight. go figure. if you find out more, let me know. seroquel has been great for my sleep, but it leaves me hungry and groggy the next day. good luck!
