Posted by rainbowbrite on January 30, 2005, at 7:05:35

I am desperatley in need of a speelping drug. I have used many and they often didn't work in the past but now i feel like im doing a sleep depreivation marathon again. Other than ambien or benzos what KEEPS people asleep? Unless benzos do?? i can get them to put me out if i take enough but staying is a very important part or sleep. Im getting a little worried about this :( I feel nuts right now. On average Im getting about 3 hours a night. any suggestions?

Benzodiazepines worked very well for me, of course , when you stop taking them for awhile, the sleeping issue again arises. The unfortunate part of taking drugs (legal or not) for issues such as pain, sleep, anxiety, etc. is that they are short term and that you would have to stay on them for a very long time if the issue at hand is a chronic one. So if you are going the benzo route, then I hope you would have enough to last you a long time, and to be careful with them as they will cause withdrawal symptoms at times. I would also perhaps look at an herb that really works a lot know as kava, and to not use the capsules but to use the roots as a drink as it is much more potent that way(and please dearly keep in mind what medicines you are taking with it if you are, and ask your doctor about this, as the kava may conflict or make sedation more strong), you must keep in mind about the kava that it has a reverse-tolerance with many people, in that, you must use it a number of times before you start really feeling the remedial effects of it. And I would like to know, is this sleeping issus of yours indeed a chronic one, has it lasted a long time? I must word myself carefully here, as to not encourage usage, but instead to encourage understanding and knowledge of certain other things like poppy tea, cannibis and the like if you read about those, you must sometimes balance your health and the legalities unfortunately in this difficult life of ours. Knowledge is a very important and delicate thing to respect, it can save your life and also take it away.

Hi Heroin

thanks for you reply
that is very interesting kava...? I don't know much about it. I have had sleep problems for years only they are acting up for first time in a awile. I get kind of hypo-manic and maybe its relaIted to all this. And Im curious if you know if no sleep affects appetite and weight loss? I am having to force food into my mouth and losing weight. So to answer your question...chronic? Sort of, I've always wondered if my lack of need for LOTS of sleep has anything to do with how MUCH energy Im bursting with. See I have never been one to actually sleep much to begin with but Im talking 6 or 7 hours (i knokw most people only get that but I don't feel the need for any more if that makes sense) At this point Im not thinking right anymore adn it is affecting me, so I need to figure soemthing out. I use to smoke weed and it definately makes you sleep but I kind of lost interest in the drug a few years ago after a science class LOL. Id definately be into herbal things such as the kava!! How do I preapre it, is it easy adn self explanitory? Also is it long lasting? I just want to be able to sleeeeep for 6 or 7 straight as opposed to waking up at 4 am for the day. Also Is it absolutely safe? Im very careful about what I ingest (except psych meds LOL)

Thanks so much
rain

Codeine, a lot of weed and hash and benzos do the job for me. I suggest you try a hypnotic benzodiazepine like Mogadon (nitrazepam), Restoril (temazepam)(short half life), Versed (midazolam), and my personal favourate which is sure to keep you out all night long Rohypnol (flunitrazepam), all are designed for inducing sleep. You'll build up a tolerance if you abuse them or use them long term and they can become habbit forming and difficult to do without but work a treat.

I have had sleep problems lately because of anxiety/panic attacks/depression.

I really don't want to depend on any medicine and am scared of the effects of all these chemicals in my brain.

I try everything I can naturally- warm bath, relaxation techniques, warm milk, and if none of that works-- I will either do Benadryl or Melatonin.

Have you ever had a sleep study done on you? If you've had this problem for a long while, I think you should look into a sleep study.

dude.... trash the weed and hash and try Trazodone. it's cheap, effective, and relatively benign. I've been using it for years and it's been a staple in my drug regimen to counteract insomnia, other-med-induced or otherwise.

self-medicating is understandable, but potentially dangerous to advocate to someone who hasn't tried every option.....

thanks everyone....

Lunesta

A new sleep med will be available in a few weeks called Lunesta. It is very safe and effective. It's the first sleep med approved by the FDA for long term use. It both puts you to sleep, and also keeps you sleeping.

bill-- lunesta sounds wonderful! ambien put me to sleep for two years before pooping out recently. since i've stopped taking it every night, it works better when i do take it. but ambien has always worn off during the middle of the night and has often caused me to be wide awake at 4am or so. anything that puts me to sleep and keeps me sleeping would be great, especially if it's non-addictive. will lunesta be categorized as a controlled substance?
my problem is that my pdoc is not a drug specialist, so she is often not up to date with the latest trends and meds. for my last two pdocs, both psychoanalysts, i've had to make suggestions and have been the guinea pig since they were prescribing these drugs for the first time.
about the cost-- will lunesta be ridiculously expensive? my insurance has three tiers of meds-- generic, preferred brand name, and non-preferred brand name. the copays for non-preffered are much higher. they are sort of slow to update their categories, so lunesta will probably be non-preferred until at least 2006. any idea how much it costs? who is the manufacturer? eli lilly seems to be one of the worst as far as charging an arm and a leg, but all the companies are pretty bad. thanks!

I pasted this from a newsletter. Sepracor is putting it out maybe in March or April. I'm sure they will charge a lot for this drug.

"Sepracor announced earlier this month, however, that the drug's originally envisioned January launched would be delayed at least through the first quarter of 2005."
