Just got back from the Pdoc with doxepin and gabitril. This is the first time I havn't suggested a med. Figured I let someone ele decide for a change..lol. Anyway, doing my normal post-pdoc visit research, i see doxepin is a TCA--which I'm taking 4 sleep....and gabitril is for anti-convulsant and for BP. 25mg of dox & 2mg x3 a day of gab. What does averyone else take these for, and how well do they work 4 u? I'm guessing this is old school stuff, right?

I, too, was given Doxepin for sleep, and it did work pretty well for that. It also gave me the biggest case of the munchies, which was not desirable.

hi thinkfast-- i've heard of gabitril only in passing and know even less about doxepin. is gabitril one of the end of the line anticonvulsants used for bipolar stability like neurontin? is it used like neurontin mostly for anxiety? i've been through nearly all of the anticonvulsants for BP II without much success. did you mention what you're taking gabitril for?

25mg an hour before bed. Works very well for me. Good luck!

In reply to I take doxepin for nighttime anxiety and sleep... » thinkfast, posted by Colleen D. on January 18, 2005, at 18:10:35
I was prescribed Gabitril as a sleep aid when my Nardil was causing insomnia. I took 2 mg and then 4 mg, but neither dose did much for my insomnia. It did cause heartburn. That's about all I know.

I took Doxepin for sleep for a long time and then found out it was the cause of my carbohydrate cravings, so even though it worked well as a sleep aid, I switched to Ambien for sleep. I had a lot of trouble controlling my eating and weight while on Doxepin. As for Gabitril, my pdoc recently started me on it as I was having terrible anxiety from either Abilify or Concerta (I say it is the Abilify) but I have found that I have no noticeable effect whatsoever from Gabitril....I am very sensitive to med dosages so took 4mg for a brief period and am now down to 1 prior to going off for good. I think it is really a matter of whether or not you do well on any of the GABA-effecting drugs.
This is the end of the thread.
