The reason that ECT is so much more potent than other treatments (in my opinion) is this.
ECT increases BDNF some 200%+ in the hippocampus, wheres AD medication may only increase it some 20%, (will try to site these studies)
I have a plan to try and provide my brain with a cumulative BDNF boost by combining the BDNF enhanciing properties of several sources.
All of the following boost BDNF expression, I will try them all together.
1) Exercise

http://www.mesolimbic.com/rtms/bdnf.html3) Fasting
http://www.stanford.edu/group/hopes/rltdsci/hdnews/t8.html4) Listening to classical music
http://www.memoryzine.com/Articles/Mozart.htm
5) Antidepressant
http://neuro-www.mgh.harvard.edu/forum_2/MultipleSclerosisF/3.31.9910.51PMAnti-depres.html6) Lithium

Hopefully I will provide for myself ECT like results without having to do ECT. All of the above are relitivly benign in themselves.

Hey link,
Good to see you have plan! I concurr that ECT should be an absolute last resort. Your plan seems fairly sound and you have obviously done *plenty* of research. Ever consider OCD? Just a thought, no insult intended. Best Wishes, and get out and have a great new years!

I've been told I have OCD by some doctors. The dose of SSRI they wanted me to take had me sleeping all day long.
