Wellbutrin and Anxiety

Posted by ed_uk on December 26, 2004, at 20:18:53

To all anxiety sufferers who've taken Wellbutrin...........

Could you tolerate the Wellbutrin?

(I know many of you hated it but I guess a few of you might actually have liked Wellbutrin.)

Ed.

I like Wellbutrin. And yeah, I do experience anxiety. The Wellbutrin does affect it, especially since it interferes with the med I take for anxiety. Still, the AD response from Wellbutrin is good enough that I don't really mind the increased agitation and anxiety. Besides, with the AD response I get with Wellbutrin, I can deal with the anxiety in most circumstances.

Any reason you're asking? Or just research? (By the way, let me say it again: I *like* Wellbutrin.)

Hi Racer!

I'm asking because I have a lot of problems with fatigue, drowsiness and lack of motivation. I think bupropion might possibly help.

How much does the bupropion worsen your anxiety?

Ed.

Hi there, I have to say I agree with Racer... Wellbutrin does cause an increase in anxiety... but when your depression levels are down, you are able to move past it easier. This is coming from someone who has severe anxiety problems, yet managed to take wellbutrin alone for two years!

took three months, but the anxiety diminished for the most part, and the residual anxiety is something I've learned to deal with. It's a tradeoff I fine living with

I take wellbutrin and can tell you that I think it does cause my anxiety to increase quite a bit. As of now, I am still taking it.....anxious as I am, howevere; I am do for a doctors appt. early Jan. and am wondering if I will be taken off because of the anxiety. As far as depression, I sometimes think that it may not be helping that as much as before. I have dropped my dosage down to 150mg. to try to lessen the anxiety a little, so that my be why it's not working as well. One nice thing about this is there are no sexual side effects, as with other SSRI's. Tolerate it? I am thinking not right now, but.....when I went off it a year ago and took Lexapro, I hated that because of the sexual side effects! soooooo back to Wellbtutrin I went. Time will tell....soon. Good luck:) -L

I take Klonopin and Trileptal as well as Wellbutrin, but I think Wellbutrin helps with depression so it ends up helping with Anxiety as a um side effect? When I get down, I don't go as far down and then I don't get as worried. It may have made me feel a bit jittery, or anxious, or overly energized, but that seems to have diminished, and I think maybe trying a lower dose first and then going up slowly you might be able to find out at what level that happens because it doesn't seem to happen at a lower dose for me. The Klonopin and Trileptal may cloud my judgement on Wellbutrin though I guess. The side effects (other than possible seizure, but I've read that if you withdraw slowly it's almost nil...could be wrong on that though) are minimum for me, so that's a big plus too and maybe a reason to try it for you. Good luck.
Meg

Hi Ed,

Anxiety is a strong component of my mental health issues, which also include depression or cyclothymia/BP II.

I tried Wellbutrin a couple of years ago for about 5 months as monotherapy. It definitely helped with depression: more energy, motivation, etc. But I do think that it made my anxiety worse in a number of ways. I felt tense all the time, especially if I wasn't accomplishing something. I became very goal-driven, to the point where it was a little uncomfortable and bordering on obsessional.

I ended up adding on an SSRI and that reduced the anxiety to almost nil. (Too bad it also killed my sexual function and ratcheted up my appetite, otherwise I'd still be on the combo...)

Good luck,
cache-monkey

Thank you everyone for your responses :-)

I do worry that Wellbutrin might make me tense and obsessional. Oh well, I probably won't get to try it anyway :-(

Regards,
Ed.

I have a question-I've been on Lexapro for a year and a half and have gained a lot of weight. I saw my doctor yesterday and he told me to try Welbutrin. I was on Lexapro for anxiety and panic attacks. Is he crazy for prescribing Welbutrin for my anxiety and panic attacks? All I'm reading is that it increases these things-I don't have major problems with depression-my major problems are the panic and anxiety and I don't want to take this if it's going to make it worse instead of helping! Help!
