Social Phobia and AD's and Antianxiety Meds Help?

Posted by Phillipa on December 26, 2004, at 11:40:58

Just wanted to know if others share my problem. It doesn't matter if I take AD's or Anti-anxiety meds I fall apart in crowds, malls, stores, and even in the homes of family. Do you have any meds that help with this? Thanks. Phillipa. I just don't feel safe in these situations and my meds don't help. Am I crazy?

I take l.5mg of Klonopin a day. I take it at night. I also take a total of l0cc of chlordal hydrate at bedtime to sleep. I have been taking Cymbalta, but I am almost weaned off of it because it does nothing for me except make me feel ahedonia and not caring. I was on Xanax and it worked pretty well for me and then it too stopped working and just made me tired. I would love to be "normal" attend parties, go shopping, not be afraid to be alone, ect, and be "able to smell the roses". What meds do you take for anxiety? Phillipa

Yes, I did. Thank-you Ed. Three more capsules of Cymbalta {it's an SNRI though}. I've kept the unused part of capsules in case I need them, but don't know what to mix them with to take them. I'm also trying to cut down on CH, but I always end up taking full amt. so far. I wish I could get this pdoc to let me use something other than Klonopin because I feel this adds to anxiety and depression effects.CBT says do it anyway by desensitizing yourself. It doesn't seem to help me though. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

i'm going to presume this post is pointed to me although it's pointed to your self :-)
I take 2mg klonopin at morning and sometimes 1-2mg at evening, don't you think it would better to take it at morning or does it cause you drowsiness? If you take it at bed time, most of the effect will be gone next day. I also take xanax as needed, but this is only temporarily, until the anxiety from a too high dosage of zoloft diminish. Although zoloft helps a bit against anxiety, it's the klonopin that really does the job. I mainly take zoloft(and remeron) for depression.
No other med has been as effecient against anxiety/SP as klonopin.

I thought you referred to Cymbalta as an SSRI, although I could be mistaken. Thanks for the x! Phillipa

Hi! :-)

I think what I said was that if you had had difficulty withdrawing from SSRIs then you might also have difficulty withdrawing from Cymbalta (even though it is not an SSRI.)

Yes Tensor, it was directed to you. You really think Klonopin is the best anti-anxiety med? How is the Xanax working for you? Have you ever tried Valium? This at 5mg used to really keep me "normal" in all situations before I tried an AD. Before that if a doc rx'd me one I took one and quit the next day because I had so many side effects. After I took an antidepressant continuously {maybe l l/2 years} the meds did not work the same any more. I have heard Zoloft works well after initial anxiety side effects from people I know of. Was that true for you? Sorry to ignore your Post for so long. Phillipa

Sorry Ed; You're probably right. I'll have to go back and read the Babbles. I still have them. Fondly Phillipa. PS I'm getting confused responding to so many Threads with you.
