Anyone been on Librium? (chlordiazepoxide)

Posted by ed_uk on December 24, 2004, at 20:36:55

Hi,

I've noticed that chlordiazepoxide (Librium) is hardly ever discussed on p-babble. In the UK, chlordiazepoxide isn't nearly as widely prescribed as diazepam (Valium) but it is still more popular than lorazepam (Ativan) or clonazepam (Klonopin / Rivotril). Xanax isn't really used at all, except on rare occasions by private psychiatrists.

How do YOU like Librium?

Ed.

One of my docs was a big Librium fan for some reason..anyway, I took it for anxiety and for sleep and it worked quite nicely. The only problem is the kind of drunken feeling one gets after a couple doses, even if the doses are separated as specified in the rx. But, that went away for me quite shortly.

My teenage daughter was recently put on chlordiazepoxide 5mg BID by her Pdoc who used to run a university anxiety clinic. She has also been on Lexapro for dysthymia for awhile, which helped only a bit with the social anxiety. Chlordiazepoxide helped more the anticipatory anxiety (no longer wanted to avoid the situation), but the pro-social aspect (actually talking and conversing) was still lacking. She started on Provigil (100mg)last week and we've noticed a increase in the "talkability", though I want to see if this holds when she starts back to school in January. This may be the right combo for her, though the Pdoc said that we might think about weaning her off the chlordiazepoxide early next year. I'm worried that it's the combo that works, rather than the individual meds, but we'll see. She also works weekly with a psychologist who actually takes her out to malls, with her daughter and friends to movies, and facilitates interaction. She used to get panic attacks in those settings, but it was more specific to having other teenagers "see" her and worry about what they thought about her, than with adults. With adults we didn't have as much of a problem. The Pdoc is a big believer in doing this type of field work and says that the Librium should be used as an acute measure. Though if we wean her off it and see an increase in anxiety again, I'll be pressing him with info obtained on this sight about the long term use of benzos.

At the low dose of 5mg of chlordiazepoxide, when we've forgotton to give her a dose, there have been no withdrawal symptoms, so I don't anticipate a problem with weaning, but will do it very slowly just to be sure.

The choice of Librium over other benzos was due to a more pronounced effect on dopamine, if I remember right. She was not on any stimulant at that time for her ADHD and needs something for attention, but stimulants increase her social anxiety and cause a very flat affect (Adderall worse than the others)which is not good for the sociability factor. Just to throw it out there, Strattera caused depression in her which reversed when we DC'ed it.

Our only problem now is a definite decrease in appetite, though this started before we started the chlordiazepoxide and Provigil and long after the Lexapro was started. Need to see someone about that. May be something as simple as parasites or may not be.
