rTMS - didn't work for me

Posted by Dan Perkins on December 20, 2004, at 19:57:18

Just completed 30 treatments of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for depression and I have experienced absolutely no change in my mood. Treatments were about 40 minutes each, 5 days a week for a period of 6 weeks.

It was a painful dud.

I'm so sorry it didn't work for you. Well, at least you didn't pay for it (monetarily). . .that would have been adding insult to injury. Hang in there!

Sorry to here that. That really stinks.

Had you ever tried ECT?

I had a course of 15 ECT treatments in 1991 that failed to help me. I'm trying to determine if this represents an index to non-response to rTMS.

What's next for you?

I've never had ECT and am not near ready to try it at this point. I have no idea if non-response to ECT correlates to non-response to rTMS, but it does seem reasonable to think that there might be some correlation.

I don't want to be overly negative about rTMS at this point because I have heard of a few people (albeit a small minority) responding well to it. I do think they still have a lot to figure out about rTMS before it becomes a useful treatment in the general population.

Next up for me is Tryptophan. If that doesn't work, I'm going to go back to Parnate.

Yes, it is legal again. It is a big topic of conversation on the Alternative section of this website.

Tryptophan can be purchased on Julia Ross's website (She wrote the mood cure) and at the Health Recovery site from the woman who wrote some book about depression/anxiety free naturally. She has a clinic in the twin cities. Just a caution. My husband got totally entranced by these books/systems and by Peter Bregin and became unmercifull in his pressure to get me off the last tiny bit of paxil I took to keep from going through withdrawal.

The final withdrawal and foray into the "natural" cures have left me 15months later with a brain that is not functioning and a stomach that can no longer take the med type that worked so well for me (SSRI's). 5-htp entirely destroyed my sensitive stomach, to the point that I could no longer take prozac (which I could take before 5-htp).

For some people these supplements are a godsend, but my husbands view that they were the only answer, and these books views that these natural supplements are side effect free (Bull!) have left me without a life. Please proceed with caution. Don't trust anyone who claims to have all the answers (and that includes drug companys as well as supplement pushers)
