Cortisol inhibitors: ketoconazole and metyrapone

Posted by SLS on December 23, 2004, at 7:59:54

Has anyone tried either of these drugs to treat depression or bipolar disorder? If so, did you have any tests to establish cortisol function?

Thanks.

Drugs that inhibit the secretion of cortisol from the adrenal glands include:

aminoglutethimide
etomidate
etoconazole
ketoconazole
megestrol
metyrapone
miconazole
mitotane

While I have never tried these drugs, I have found tremendous relief from the drug cyproheptadine. This drug is sometimes used in adrenal disorders like cushings where cortisol needs to be slashed.

Periactin (for me) has antipsychotic and antidepressant qualities.

Interesting as Periactin has "anti-serotonin" properties. It's what they gave me when I was in the ICU with severe Serotonin Syndrome.

I once treated a skin condition with ketoconazole (200 mg/d for 10 days) and in hindsight remember experiencing no depression during that period.
