What is this that's happening? Please help

Posted by olysi79 on December 15, 2004, at 9:45:34

Hello all,
I am in dire need of help. I am going through a mixed agitated depression of sorts. These have been the bane of my life for the past year, and this one is back with a vengeance.

I wake up in the morning with severe anxiety and agitation... so much that I feel like I must walk around, pace, cannot stop. The anxiety is overwhelming. During the course of the day, the anxiety comes down just a bit but is still there, and I have crying spells and cannot relax. Finally in the evening, I am simply agitated andrestless (cannot stop fidgeting and tapping), but my anxiety levels have decreased markedly... only to often repeat the same vicious cycle the next day. I take trileptal and Luvox, and Ativan as needed, and actually was doing ok until they tried Buspar, which destabilized me. The only other variable I can think of is that I went on a low carb diet abotu two months ago just to make sure I did not gain weight form my meds... I have a strong suspicion that this may be involved. First of all, what is going on with me? Has anyone experienced these agitated mixed episodes? I need help. I see my psychiatrist tomorrow, and need suggestions as to what I may do to overcome this hell that has been torturing me for the past year off and on.
Please help

What's your dosing schedule with your Trileptal and Luvox? Are you taking all the Luvox at bedtime? Are you taking any other nonpsych meds or OTC meds? That's curious that the anxiety settles down throughout the day and is worse in the morning. That's the kind of pattern I had when I sought help when I was 20 and was first diagnosed. Another thing.. get your serum sodium checked (the trileptal could be causing hyponatremia). Also check your thyroid... you could be getting hyperthyroid. Anyhow, I am wondering if you are taking all your Luvox at bedtime and it is agitating you somehow? The low carb diet thing.. there might be something there if you had some weight loss and your metabolism went up a bit as a result.. or if you are *over* restricting your carbohydrates. Gosh I hope you get better, I know what that crap is like.

You might want to inquire about adding a low dose of an atypical antipsychotic such as Risperdal. SSRIs such as Luvox can sometimes cause agitation and anxiety through stimulation of the serotonin-2A receptor. Risperdal and some of the other atypical antipsychotics selectively blockade this receptor at low dosages--might prove helpful for your symptoms.

Hi todd, I took Ativan,Benedryl, and Zyprexa (for the first time I might add) to offset this and so far, it's working a bit to calm my mind... the anxiety is ever present though.

Low carb diets can cause irritability and decreased mood, so it may be option to increase your carbs slightly and see how it works. You don't have to go off the diet entirely, just slowly introduce a bit more carbs.

Hello,
Yes this sounds a little familiar to me, I used to go to bed feeeling reasonable but dreading how I would feel in the morning.
After 26 others drugs I finally found that for some reason xanax killed it completely.
Clearly I do not know what will work in your case, but I always beleived something would, and I beleive that for you too.

Best wishes

Glenn

Hi there, thanks for the response. I took an anti-psychotic and it whacked that doozie cold. Doing better now.
