Paxil

Posted by libbyann on December 7, 2004, at 11:19:51

Will someone with experience with Paxil please tell me about their experiences? I'm on day 11 and have some questions about what I'm feeling. I'm pretty sure it's the Paxil, but I'm hoping it will wane with time. Can anyone offer any experience-based encouragement? :)

Thanks,
libbyann

Libbyann,

I was on Paxil for 6 years, and it worked great for me for not only depression, but also general anxiety and social anxiety. It did, however, take 3 to 4 weeks for things to even out when I started taking it. But, after about a month of using it, I felt like my old self again - happy, enthusiastic, carefree. The first few weeks were rough, and I experienced increased anxiety, fatigue and stomach problems. To deal with the anxiety side effect, my doctor gave me a very small perscription of Xanax. This helped in the first few weeks on the Paxil. The side effects, however, did go away after the first month. I went off Paxil for about a year and a half, and then tried to go back on it again, and it didn't work second time around. Nevertheless, my first experience with Paxil was very good.

Good luck, and give the Paxil a few weeks to do its thing.

Tamara

Thank you so much for telling me that. I was hoping to hear something encouraging! The anxiety is a bit increased, but at the same time, not as bad. It feels more biological than emotional, if that makes sense. There's also kind of a pressure in my head - not a headache, just like maybe my brain is swelling! :) Probably not, but that's how it feels. It's not painful. My appetite is fine, but the first few days, I had trouble sleeping. I'm on day 11 and last night I slept like a baby. Hallelujah! So I'm hoping the weirdness I'm feeling will start to fade and I'll feel like myself again. I'm hoping and praying this stuff works. I've tried a few others and it gets sort of discouraging when you feel like nothing is working. I asked my doc, "Am I just a freak because nothing works?" She said of course not - we just have to find the right stuff! Sometimes I feel like a science project. But I think I'm finally getting better. :) Thanks so much for your input!

I know how you feel. Since Paxil didn't work for me the second time I tried it (after being off of it for 1.5 to 2 years), I have been put on Prozac, Effexor XR, Celexa and now Anafranil (an old tricyclic AD). The Anafranil seems to be doing the trick, even at a low dose of 50 mg. I will probably go up to 75 mg soon for increased effectiveness. All this to say, try not to get discouraged. It sometimes takes a few trials before finding the right medication or combination of medications. However, if you have the same luck with Paxil that I did, then you should be feeling better soon. Keep your fingers crossed, and don't be shy to discuss any really bothersome side effects with your doctor.

Take care.

Tamara
