When Ativan come out,was it a drug of choice ever?

Posted by mmcconathy on November 24, 2004, at 20:04:15

I going to maybe ask my doc if i can switch to Ativan, since it doesnt really seem to be a medication to worry about abuse (eg Xanax)

I never really here much news about it today.

I know in the mid 70's Valium was a #1 drug of choice for a long time, then eventually it just blew out when SSRI's entered the arena.

Has Ativan ever been favored by doc's?

But besides that there's really not more intresting news on it.

Thanks

I can't give you a historical perspective, but I can say that my pdoc prefers it over xanax b/c it lasts longer. I have found it somewhat useful. A little too subtle at times. Then again, my anxiety is quite a force to be reckoned with!! :)

I like Ativan. I find it less sedating than other benzos. I think doctors often overestimate its potency and prescribe doses that are too low- that's probably why some people say it's subtle.

Ativan was and still is one of the most popular benzos in the world...it has very good reputations for being harmless to the liver,no drug interactions, excellent for insomnia, general anxiety, panic disorder, agitated mania and psychosis, anathesia,.

Unfortunatly, like other popular benzos it got bad publicity to let SSRis rule the market. However it withstood the test of time...

It is one of the best benzos for me...
It can be taken once a day for as-needed anxiety or insomnia because on average its effects lasts 10-12 hours...or 2 times a day.
usual dose 1-2mg twice a day but can go up for some diorder (severe agitation etc)...0.5mg a dose I think is ineffective.

Good luck.
