Tachycardia and TCAs

Posted by ed_uk on November 23, 2004, at 13:10:20

Hi!

I've been on lofepramine (a TCA) for about two years. One of the side effects is sinus tachycardia. My ECG is otherwise normal. Resting heart rate is usually about 110. The tachycardia does not cause any symptoms. Do you believe the tachycardia to be of any importance? My pdoc said that I should just ignore it, which is what I have been doing.

Regards,
Ed.

I think for the most part, tachycardia is not important. If it is accompanied by other heart disturbances than it probably should be treated.

Ie tachycardia and high blood pressure are not good. But for the most part the pulse rises as the blood pressure decreases.

i think i agree with the other poster. i've had resting tachycardia of between 110 and 130 without other problems and sometimes without even noticing a difference in heart rate. however, when i've had tachycardia and hypotension, then i've had problems with blacking out/fainting, circulation, and blood sugar. electrolyte problems that cause arrythmias in addition to tachycardia can be dangerous because your heart may not be able to pump and distribute blood as needed. i don't know if this helps, but i hope so. i've been considering TCAs myself.

Thanks everyone,

My BP is normal (except that time I took chlorpromazine when it was about 170/90.)
