Celexa side effects question

Posted by enjay on November 22, 2004, at 23:04:06

I have recently been prescribed 20mg of Celexa once a day, however have started off taking 10mg to minimise initial s/effects.
Despite the low dose I have noticed increased anxiety and stomach agitation.
My doctor indicated that these initial s/effects will reduce after about 2 weeks.
Please advise, from experience, if that is the case.
Thanks
enjay

Not the case for me. I take zyprexa with it to get rid of anxiety.

Can I ask what you're taking the Celexa for? I took it a few years ago & nausea was a negative side-effect I noticed almost immediately; however, it went away within the first few weeks of treatment. Try taking it with a meal.
Best,
L.

Thank you both for your replies.
Laree, I am taking Celexa mainly for a long standing moderate anxiety condition.
Would be keen to know both of your opinions of Celexa.

I had side effects at doses as low as 10mg also.
I've had two trials of Celexa. The first time, I had anxiety initially, but it did fade after about 10 days. The second time (recently) I was also taking Klonopin, so had no anxiety at all.
I also had nausea, gut pain and general gastric upset, which took weeks to subside.
The side effects that did not resolve, were headaches, insomnia and sexual dysfunction.
Unfortunately, I had to stop taking Celexa in trial 2, due to the side effects, even though I did find it very helpful for my anxiety, particularly when taken with a low dose of Klonopin.
It's quite likely that all of your start-up side effects will subside within 2 weeks. Celexa was helpful for my daughter's anxiety with no side effects...so I wish you good luck!
Jas

I have been on celex for the past three months, My prescription increases by double each month so far and now I am on 40mg. I had the same issues you did for the first two weeks then it went away. Unfortunately for me, and it may be my diet, I have some of these effect every time the dosage is increased. I am also on lamictal which has some of the same listed side effects these two together could be my issues. Just thought I would share that with you

Enjay,
Celexa substantially helped me with anxiety. I hope it starts to have similar effect for you.
Best,
L.

Thanks Newbftcards and Laree (again)
It's good to hear that the s/effects I'm getting may disappear and that it works for anxiety.
On both counts I'm noticing some improvements already so it looks promising.
