depression from provigil?

Posted by migration on November 21, 2004, at 22:00:37

I started taking Nardil in October. A month later, at 45mg, I was more confident, outgoing, and happy. People noticed a change in me. I still had social anxiety, but I didn't let it control me as much. But I had alot of sedation, I couldn't drive or focus in class. I later increased to 60 mg to see if I could get more relief from social anxiety. A few days later I started having moderate orthostatic hypotension. I had previously made an appt to see my psychiatrist about the sedation. He prescribed Provogil. I told him about the recent hypotension but he didn't say much about it. I took 200mg of Provigil and got very depressed. During this time the hypotension was getting worse, I was nearly bedridden, and now after started Provigil also extremely depressed. I didn't take Provigil for one day and the depression lifted entirely (though the sedation retured). The next day I took 100mg and was able to stay awake again. After lying in bed for a week and missing all my classes, I reduced Nardil to 30mg. It is two days later now and the orthostatic hypotension is getting better, 100mg of Provigil keeping me awake, but the good effects I had from Nardil are gone. Now I'm socially withdrawn, downcast, lacking confidence. I feel like I'm back where I was before taking Nardil. Is the provigil causing this? Or the reduction of Nardil? Though I am recovering from the hypotension (I hope), I feel pretty weird from doing nothing but lying in bed for a week. I was mostly alone during that time, so I don't know if that by itself could be causing me to be depressed and discouraged since it was pretty rough.

What is going on? What should I do?

Hi.

Yes, Provigil can exacerbate one's depression. There have been a few reports of this on PB. Mine was one of them. The increase in depression occurred at a dosage of 200mg and began on the third day of therapy.

Wow, glad I read this thread. I asked my PDoc about it 'cause I read studies where it helped some SAD patients. I know everyone's mileage varies, but this is good to know.

This is the end of the thread.
