Hi,
I'm not Bi-Polar, but my p/doc has raised my dose of Sodium Valproate to 2000mg for my anxiety (GAD, social phobia, panic, obssevie thoughts etc), and depression.
Has anyone found Sodium Valproate to be useful in treating anxiety? Does it have any anti-depressant effect?? I want to come off my 40mg Prozac due to the sexual side-effects, but I'm not sure whether I will be OK on just the Sodium Valproate.
Thanks!

> Thanks!Hi, I am wondering (given you are taking a rather high dose of valproate), is it helping you with your anxiety? I am bipolar and I find that generally it (valproate) does tend to reduce anxiety, but have found little or no antidepressant effect from it. I've tried to eliminate clonazepam and AD's (that definitely do help with anxiety) and haven't gotten good results with just valproate.

Valproate does have some antianxiety effects, because it does increase GABA signalling. However, I personally found that it did not have any antidepressant effect. I would be cautious on trying epival alone if you depressive symptoms are prominant. Ie keep an eye on things if lowering prozac.
