I have been taking neurontin for anxiety for nine years. The dose has been slightly increased over time, being on 2100mg/day for some time. It works very well for me, but over the past year, I noticed slight pain under my right rib cage each time I took a dose. I decided to stop taking it, and tapered off over five days. after being totaly off the drug for three days, I experenced horrible withdrawl symptoms, worse than when I stopped xanax years before. Becoming concerned, I took a 300mg capsule which because of my GABA starved system, made it worse to the point of being on a bad LSD trip. I was forced to aquire some valium, which enhanced what little GABA was in my system, so I could again ingest my regular amount of neurontin. 5 days after taking my regular dose, Im starting to feel my old self. Neurontin stimulates the brain to prouduce extra GABA. Unfortunatly, after taking neurontin for a while, when you stop, your
whole system becomes depleted of GABA,and depending on the person, experiences withdrawl.
Has anyone else had a proublem stopping neuronton, and mabey have some advice for safely tappering off this drug?

Hi.
I asked you a few questions along another thread regarding your experience with Neurontin. Can you describe the withdrawal symptoms you experienced?
It is now thought that Neurontin does not affect GABA. It probably reduces the firings of glutamatergic neurons by blocking presynaptic calcium channels.

YOu could taper off the drug more slowly, plus try and add some nutrients that effect gaba synthesis in the brain ie. b6, l-glutamine, niacin, theanine, inositol, etc.

Neurontin withdrawl for me seemed just like withdrawing from a benzodiazapine. As far as neurontin affecting GABA, or the firings of glumatergic neurons by blocking presynaptic calcium channels, or I have even herd at higher doses it's bioavailability goes down, but it affects dopamine to improve mood, I don't really know. I do know that while withdrawing from it, I tried some supplements.L-glutamine seemed to make it worse, so did straight up GABA, but an hour after taking the GABA, it may have helped a little. Also inositol helps. I figured the GABA did not help so much because it can't cross the blood brain barrier. You can get pure GABA from some Vitamine shops. Body builders use the stuff at high doses to precipitate human growth hormone. Tom

I wonder if you are confusing your pain being caused by nuerontin rather than by anxiety? I have had severe pain under right rib cage for some time for which I've been prescribed neurontin (1200mg). Being a nerve pain blocker it does help but does not remove the pain. I'm sue my pains are caused by years of stress and anxiety. I'm going to a pain clinic next month but have been wondering whether to try some nortriptyline?

The human body is so complex, I would'nt rule out anything, or a combination of things. I have noticed sometimes when I get angry, the pain will show up.
Nortriptyline Im not familiar with, Its one of the few drugs I havent been on, and there aren't many of them. Good luck at the pain clinic. The only substance Ive noticed that has helped this pain for me is a herb called milkthistle. Tom

I notice at the weekend when I have a drink it seems to wash out all the neurontin in my body. I pay the price on Sunday's! It's funny you should mention milk thisle as a good reliever since I believe it has liver cleansing properties. Maybe if I take milk thistle on Sunday I won't suffer as bad.
Don't worry my friend. Just drop me a line if you need to talk.
Peace & Light.
