What types of depression Nortriptyline helps?

Posted by Kristel on October 30, 2004, at 20:09:38

Hello.

I have a unipolar depression, low energy, drive, initiative, anhedonia, dysthymia, motivation, conectration problems.....

I also have severe Social Anxiety (which leads to isolation and quite frankly NO social life at all). I think my depression and SA are intimately related.

Even when I take some klonopin and go out I still don't enjoy whatsoever going around me. I am just a social anhedonic. I don't enjoy the interaction at all. Plus, it does not take the Klonopin too much to make the depression worsen.

Can Nortriptyline help my conditions?

What about adding low dose of an atypical antipsychotic, such as risperdal ?! I read that it can help ppl at very low doses who sufer from Schizoid Personality Disorder (which is charactarized by social withdrawal, social anhedonia, social detachment and flatted affect)

Thanks for reading so far, and taking the time to respond:)

Kristel.

Nortriptyline is used particularly for severe depressive illness with melancholic features such as:
1. severe anhedonia
2. failure of mood to improve in response to something good happening
3. depression which is worse in the morning
4. loss of appetite
5. early morning awakening
6. excessive feelings of guilt
7. severe reslessness and agitation or psychomotor retardation

Nortriptyline is also effective in treating other types of depression, it can improve symptoms such as:
1. lack of motivation
2. insomnia
3. fatigue
4. depressed mood

I think nortriptyline could be a useful treatment for your depression but might not be fully effective against your social anxiety. You may find other drugs more effective for your SA eg. Nardil.

PS. It is possible that Risperdal could improve your SA but it is certainly not a first line treatment for social phobia.
