Prozac: more depressed and delusional?

Posted by Neal S on October 26, 2004, at 12:08:57

My 15 year old son is hospitalized and is being treated for what the doctors think is psychotic depression. He has been on Risperdal for 10 days, and had been improving bit by bit. Yesterday they added Prozac, and suddenly last night, his delusions and anxiety returned to the level they were at when he was first hospitalized. Could a single dose of prozac do that, or is it just coincidence? Is it normal to have a "really bad day" once in a while, while being on Risperdal, or is it a sign that the med isn't working?

I was being treated for psychotic depression with prozac and zyprexa. THe prozac *definately* exasperated the depression and the psychotic symptoms. I found the same thing with paxil.

I would try celexa, it is a lot cleaner, and it did not exasperate my psychotic symptoms. It improved my depression too.

Risperdal is strong medicine. It was most likely the prozac. Some people can switch over into mania if they are bipolar when going onto an anti-depressant. What dose of Risperdal and Prozac is he being given?
