I have recently been diagnosed as Bipolar II and have tsrted on Depakote ER 500 mg daily. My Psychiatrist has told me that on my next visit he may prescribe Zoloft or Lexapro. Anyone have any opinion as to which one would be preferred?

I have taken both at different times, and from what I remember I preferred Zoloft to Lexapro. Less sexual side effects for me. I'm thinking of asking my doc. for Zoloft again. How did your doc know you are bipolar II? -L

I've taken both. Zoloft up to 300mgs and Lexapro up to 60mgs. I prefer Zoloft. It feels smoother in my opinion and lasts longer in my body anyway. Lexapro, about 2-3 hours post dosing, would feel like the come up of an LSD trip to me. I felt spaced out and my pupils were massively dilated. That effect occurred on all dosages I've taken including 10mgs. Zoloft is better IMHO if you have social anxiety or any anxiety related problem. If depression is your problem, then lexapro might be worth a shot since it hits so hard when it kicks in. I'm currently taking 6.25mgs zoloft and 45mgs remeron by the way. I'll soon be starting an MAOI for my persistant social/generalized anxiety.
Good Luck to you,
Justin

Thank you "L" for you opnion! The diagnosis of Biploar II was not a difficult one in my opinion. My PCP had previously prescribe 150 mg of Effexor XR which I had been taking for 8 months. Effexor impacted my sleep to the point where I was only getting 3 - 4 hours of broken sleep every night yet I did not feel tired. I did not experience the elated mood that is classic of Biploar I. Thank you for your comments regarding the sexual side effects of both drugs, since these are the side effects that I am most concerned about. By the way, are you male or female? Thanks again!

well, to be honest i think neither. i was first on lex for anxiety. it never really helped me b/c 9 months later i am diagnosed as bipolar 1. i started zyprexa at 2.5 for bipolar and klonopin as needed for anxiety. lex is great for anxiety and depression and even ocd. if you are bi-polar i would consider and antiphycotic. this is only my opinion. any questions, let me know. i am not a doc though, just a patient. haha!---jess

>I haven't tried Zoloft, but I am using Cipralex (called Lexapro in US), and it helped me with both anxiety and depression. I haven't tried Zoloft, but it's known for having more side effects and working slower. I think your doctor will probably know the best advice here :-)
