I feel so very sad

Posted by Slinky on October 19, 2004, at 17:29:39

I live in UK.
I have dysthmia and rapid mood disorder..but the doc said this diagnosis may not be prescise

These are my current meds:
1200mg-sometimes more- neurontin -prescribed only 1200mg on NHS so I buy the extra neurontin online .
40mg paxil

Now the doc is putting me on lithium..even though I'm very depressed ..I am scared to take lithium..my current side effects are debilitating...
but the doc isn't interested ..i can't change my doc unless i move out of the area-and that is difficult.
I feel insignificant and unheared I have noone to talk to.
I don't know what to do.

Lithium helps hundreds of thousands -- maybe millions, who knows? Don't be scared, it might be the right one for you. If it starts to become to much, you can always go off it. Nothing's terminal.

Do you think the neurontin could possibly be causing the depression? Neurontin made me feel somewhat dysphoric and depressed at doses of 1200mg and above. It's just a thought. Do you think your doc would let you try a benzo instead? If he would, I would recommend Valium.

Are you bi-polar? If so, then lithium may help you. Don't be afraid to try it. I know it has a stigma attached to it, but it helps many people in a positive way, of this I can assure you. Besides, you can always get off if the effects are disagreeable to you.

As far as talking to people, I would find a GOOD psychotherapist that you can talk to. I have always found relief in them when I have personal issues that I need to work out. This board is good for that too.

Hope you feel better.
Justin

I know how you feel Slinky, it really is a struggle getting things done in the UK!

My current Pdoc won't listen to me either, although fortunatly my problems are less sevear than yours.
Is there no hope of going privately? It sounds to me like Nardil might be just the ticket for you.
Just a thought!

Did your doctor explain why he was wanting to put you on lithium? Do you think you are getting the winter blues there in the UK? I would bug him for a little Zyban.. my 2cents

Oh gosh, I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling so down.

FWIW, I was on lithium for a short time and it did help the depression. I only went off of it because it turned out my primary issue that made me treatment resistant was that I had hypothyroidism. The lithium really improved my mood, but because it exacerbated the hypothyroidism, I decided to go off of it. But I do know it can be a good treatment for depression.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Instead of answering individually I'll just do one post...
Dra:
I'm giving Lithium a try ..I've just had blood test and awaiting .
Jbound:
The Neurontin is the only med that's ever really helped me..I feel a bit retarded but it takes away the dread feelings...and it helps with anxiety..I think the paxil doesn't help..
Outsider:
Doc won't prescribe Nardil..I've asked.probably cause of the suicide risk?
Ritch:
I've done Zyban..initially I felt ok then I became intensly hypocondriac..worrying about my health too much..also gave me sore throat and felt tired all the time..I still have some pills left incase I have another go--because I smoke.
Noa:
I think the doc is trying it because of depression ..I'm running out of meds to try.
It may be the med for me..hopefully .
Thanks all for replying ..I appriciate your help and advice..
Look after yourselves.
