Well I've been on my mood stabilizer Trileptal for about 6 months now. It's not working for me at all. Makes me way to exhausted. Also made me gain a bunch of weight. So I have been weaning myself off of it. This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I can tolerate the dizziness once in a while. But what I can't handle is how angry I feel for no reason. I just feel crabby & edgy & mean. Most of the day I'm in a bad mood. I have one or two times that I want to cry, not bad I just get a bit teary. Then mostly I'm fine. I have had a few days where my body just hurt so bad. so bad, I just ached and ached.
Has anyone gotten off of a mood stabilizer? Does anyone have some advice? What can I do? When will I feel better? If I stick this out will all this anger and achy body stuff stop? Any info would help me at this point. I have no idea what to think or do at this point and no one around me has a clue, as they've never been on any meds.
Thanks,
LeLe

I feel so sorry. What does the doctor say? I have been on Trileptal since summer 2003. I was up to 1200mg, but now I take 600mg.I guess you can try Lamictal; it is very similar I understand. Supposedly, Keppra is not sedating, and it is an anticonvulsant.
I can't even tell anymore what the Trileptal does. I know it is quite a dampener. I am surprised that you gained weight. It usually has a mild side effect profile for most. Perhaps you could drop down to 900.What else do you take and have you been suffering from anything else that may be causing these symptoms?
I take Provigil which makes up for the cognitive dulling and sedation a little that is caused by Trileptal. My pdoc has me on 150mg a day, but I usually go with just 100mg.

Hi, I am sorry to hear about your situation. I am on 1,500mg of Trileptal. But mine was originally given to me by neurologist to treat nerve damage in my leg. But to my suprise it worked well for my anxiety. And my pdoc. told me it was used as a mood stabilizer as well.
If you want to get off I would suggest tappering gradually reducing the dose a little week by week. You could ask your doctor or pharmacist how to do this.
Also if you want to tapper off more rapidly you could get your doctor to give you something for the symptoms.
I take Klonopin and it works very well for anxiety and mood stabilizing. But at first it can be very sedating.
Hope this helped.
Let me know if you need any further help.
