Hey all..
My girlfriend takes both lexapro and an anti-seizure medication (I believe its Neurontnin but I'm not sure) for migraines and has problems getting an orgasm. Is there anything I or she can do to help remedy this?

Hi, I quit Lexapro 4 days ago bacause of that. Some find taking Buspar along with lexapro helps, other find Remeron to be helpful. Yet others combat that with adding some Selegilin or Wellbutrin. For me none helped except stopping taking it.
She might need consider taking another Anti Depressant other than a SSRI like lexapro. Wellbutrin is an anti depressant that is also pro sexual. Buspar is indicated for GAD but at some higher doses (40-60 mg a day) can help depression. Buspar acts on serotonin, the same chemical that Lexapro affects.
Remeron is an anti depressant which acts on serotonin and noradrenaline without sexual side effects.
I think SSRIs orgasm delay can be good for guys but terrible for girls. Consider switching :)
Good luck.
Christine.

Thanks Christine..I dont know if she has discussed this issue with her p-doc or not..I am also on Lexapro but like you said for me I like the delay effect, for her I am thinking not so much though..
I dont want to suggest she stop taking her meds because she is also a college student and I dont want the withdrawal to make school hard or impossible for her..and I don't want her to become depressed again b/c I know first hand how awful that is..maybe if she tried a different med that could be the answer, thanks.

>Anorgasmia is an unfortunate side effect of SSRI's. Probably the best answer is to add a low dose of another drug to cover this problem such as Remeron, Trazodone, Nortriptyline or anything that is a 5-HT2A antagonist.
Cheers,
Paul.

Another option, provided you don't use it too much, is cyproheptidine, which blocks the effects of the SSRIs. That block is both why it works, and why you can't take it daily. (If you did take it daily, you wouldn't get the benefits of the antidepressant.)
It doesn't work for everyone, but it worked well enough for me.
Good luck.

Hi Nick,
It's not clear from your original post whether your girlfriend is on Neurontin for actual seizures or whether this is for some off-label use. If the former, Wellbutrin might not be such a good idea, as I believe it lowers the threshhold for having a seizure. But presumably her pdoc would know definitively.
Also, it doesn't always do the trick I was anorgasmic on a Wellbutrin+Celexa combo. I actually rushed to get off meds entirely, which proved a bad move, as I headed into a deeply anxious depression. So, I commend you for putting your girlfriends overarching mental health first!
I currently take BuSpar. I've never taken it with an SSRI, so I don't know how it would work there. It helped with some sexual dysfunction I was experiencing on Serzone. And now taking it more or less by itself, I've found it to be very prosexual.
And, as people have posted in this thread there are other possibilities either as adjuncts or main-line therapy.
Good luck with everything!

The Neurontnin is for migraines, not for actual seizures.
I agree that her mental health is the most important thing. She has been on SSRIs since high school (about 8 years), and I know when I tried to go off SSRIs last year I lapsed into depression. Nothing is worth that.
Thanks for your response!
