buprion side effects and withdrawels

Posted by needshelp on October 5, 2004, at 18:31:21

Hello,
I am a 20 year old college student who has suffered from depression for several years. I have done the whole paxil/zoloft thing. I was not a fan or either meds. I was recently perscribed wellbutrin(buprion is the genric form my insurance company would pay for). I started taking it about 3 weeks ago. The first few days I was fine. I felt more relaxed and at ease. After 5 days my 150 mgs was increased to 300mgs. I was to take two pills a day. After the second pill the first evening I started to feel a bit feverish and sick but I went along with my studies. The next morning I felt like I had the flu but went to school and felt better as the day went by. Two nights later I started to feel feverish again, I had body aches, chills, all the classic flu symptoms. The next day I felt terrible couldnt get out of bed. I called my doctor and told me to only take one pill a day for a week and to call him back. I did this but was nauseated and unable to eat and I kept dry heaving. I went to the emergency room thinking I had the flu the only thing they could come up with was that it was viral. I had a slight soar throat but my lymph nodes were fine. I started to feel better and after two days I was back to normal except for the nausea and inability to eat. I called my doctor on friday(a week after I first spoke to him) he told me to take the second pill again. That night I felt feverish again and threw up. By monday morning I was miserable again with the same flu like feelings. I went to my doctor later that day and he thinks it could be the buprion doing this to me. I had a slight redness in my throat but no swollen lymph nodes or fever. He told me to stop taking it completly and gave me a perscription for lexapro. I am to start taking that on friday. I havent taken a dose of the buprion since yesterday morning and today I had my energy back and no nausea. After dinner I stared to feel my jaw tighten up and I got a pounding headache out of nowhere. I know this post is very long but I havent been able to find much on bubrion side effects or withdrawels. If anyone could respond to this with their experiences I would really aprreciate it. Hope fully someone will be able to shed some light on my situation. BTW my doctor ordered lab work just to double check that this is just the buprion making me feel like this and not something else more serious.

Sounds like the bupropion SR. At too high a dose you will feel sick, jaw clenching. Some of it just takes a little time to get over. I almost stoped taking it because of this, but my insurance company convinced me to stay on generic, and buy that point the harshness of the side-effects was deminishing. So I take 2-100mg in morning, 100mg lunch and 100mg dinner. Smaller doses are easyer to take, and less in the evening is better.

Thank you for taking the time to read my novel of a post :) I don't think I could handle another day of the buprion. I felt like I was literally falling apart. I couldnt leave my bed towards the tail end of the side effects. I'm nervious about starting the lexapro soo soon. I don't know if you have any experience with lexapro.

I take celexa which is supposed to be similar to lexapro. It didn't give any kind of flu simptoms, tiredness, awakeness. Some times when you discontinue a drug the side-effects last for a little while longer. The lexapro may make it easyer on you, or not help till all the bupropion is out of your system.

I spoke to my doctor today and decided to put me on prozac instead of the lexapro. I'm not to start that until monday. As of right now my head is spinning and my vision has been bothering me. I'm assuming these are withdrawels of the wellbutirn. I hope this goes away soon becasue I feel miserable right now.

Sounds good! I think prozac will be the easyest to tolerate in terms of side-effects. Its a fairly nutral SSRI.

Thank you sooo much for taking the time out to read my posts and responding to them. I actaully ended up in the er Weds night with strange muscle spasms in my neck. No one could figure out what it was being caused by. The er doc said it was stress related but I can tell you I was feeling fine before they started to happen. I dont know if thats a wellbutrin withdrawel who knows. SO I'm going to see my regular doctor today. I see that man more than I see some of my closest famalies members. Let me know if you've heard of
weird neck spasms as a withdrawel. Like I said before I very much apreciate you taking the time to read my posts and for responding. Have a great day.

I take buprion 300mg per day, and have not had a problem with it at all. I went off it for a couple of months, took Lexapro, then went back to buprion and still no side effects. The Lexapro made me and my daughter gain weight. Her more than me. I read that it's because she is a youth. Good luck, you may be just fine with Lexapro. I know it's wonderful for anxiety and depression. This is a web site where I found the information concerning SSRI's and metabolism.

Good luck. -L

Defenitly could be the bupropion. Which is comon for sizures, muscle tension, anxiety, panic. It is most common that the adverse reactions will happen at the start of or end of use. Especialy if you are using alcohol, or where using alcohol. Most of this stuff is in the prescribing info for wellbutrin SR. you can get it off the internet.

Hello,
Sorry I havent written back sooner. I was busy all day with school. I ended up going to my regular doc and told me that the muscle spasms were do to damage that I suffered to the back of my neck. How this happened is a mystery. I work at a funeral home on the weekends and the only thing I can think of is improperly lifting a flower piece. The doc said you could damage your neck or back by even sleeping the wrong way. So the muscle spasms had nothign to do with the wellbutrin and had everythign to do with something I did to my neck. I'm glad that it was unrelated to the wellbutrin becasue it was really worrying me. I thought I'd share this with you since you have been so generous in sharing your knowlegde. Thank you again. BTW I dont drink alchohol. My doc warned me that was a big no no with taking anti depressants.
