I just started taking Adderol. My friend told me (whose son has ADHD) that if it makes you feel calmer rather than like taking speed, than you are definitely bipolar. Is there any truth to this?
I have noticed that while I do feel calmer (I don't feel the urge to compulsively ramble like I often do) I feel a bit irritable, as well. Also, I am able to sleep at night, with no real problems except that I seem to wake up a bit earlier in the morning, earlier than I really need to (I'm not complaining because usually I feel like I need 10 hours a night).

I think that what your friend said is not true. Atleast, I have never heard that. Feeling calmer is very common with ADD drugs including Adderal.

I think the original poster meant to say if you feel calm, you definitely have ADHD (not bipolar). I think this may be generally true but you disagree? It depends how you define "calm" as sleepy (unusual) or more confident and therefore relaxed or even euphoric (high) which is pretty universal. It is a common misconception that if stimulants make you feel better & think clearer then you have ADHD but that is certainly not true, almost everyone thinks clearer & feels good on them. But feeling sleepy or being able to sleep on them is more unusual.

Oops, I actually meant to say ADHD, not bipolar! So, what you are saying is that because I feel calmer on Adderol, this is a normal effect for everyone, but that the fact that I can sleep is more unusual. I am taking Depakote, Wellbutrin and Zoloft, as well, two of which don't necessarily contribute to good sleep, but the Depakote must counteract them. Do you think it is counteracting the Adderol, too? My friend thinks that Adderol supercedes just about everything except, maybe, Zannax, or anti-anxiety meds like those.
I have been recently been diagnosed with ADHD, and previously with rapid-cycling bipolar, and general/social anxiety disorder.
Thanks for both of your replies. :)

I have the same symptoms you have. I'm taking Lamictal and Keppra and my doc is thinking about adding Adderall XR.
I've never taken a stimulant but am hoping for some positive effects.
Overall, can you tell a positive difference from Adderall?

I don't really know how Adderall affects sleep. I think that Ritalin can adversely affect sleep if it is taken too late in the day. You could do a google search and get information on Adderall and sleep.
