Amisulpride and Prolactin

Posted by iris2 on October 1, 2004, at 11:49:57

Does anyone know anything about the consequences of this?

I am taking Amisulpride and had my prolactin tested. It came out too high. I am not geting my monthly period since I started on this medication also. I do not want to stop taking it as it reduces my depression but I am not sure if there might be real negative consequences to having this increase? Also perhaps there is a way to decrease the Prolactin levels with a suppliment or another medication?

Iris 2--I can tell you that Parlodel (bromocriptine) is used to reduce abnormally high prolactin levels. It is also used along with deprynel and/or L-dopa in treating Parkinson's. And it is used by some strictly for its AD effects. I'm not recommending you take it, but perhaps it might give you some clues as to what is going on re: amisulpride and how you might deal with it.

Coincidentally, I am interested (very) in starting a trial with amisulpride, but have been unable to locate a source. I would also be interested in learning more about your own experience with it. I would be grateful if you would e-mail me at brionkerlin@yahoo.com. Best wishes on your journey to wellness! Sailor

It's an antipsychotic.
At high dose it works on the positive symptoms of schyzophrenia.
At low dose, it works on the negative symptoms of schyzophrenia. So a low dose of amilsupride can be used in dysthimia/anergic depression.

What happens with increased prolactin? What are the dangers of this condition?

I know dopamine and prolactin are inversely related, in that as dopamine goes up prolactin goes down and vice versa.

If your prolactin is too high at the moment, my educated guess is that the amisulpride is lowering your dopamine to cause this effect.

I am a little fuzzy about this drug but if it's used as an antipsychotic for schizophrenia then my guess is that it's lowering dopamine at some level. If I recall correctly, it has variable effects on dopamine depending on the dosage.

I know drugs like bromocriptine are dopamine agonists and thus raise dopamine resulting in lowered prolactin levels. But if you're already taking a drug that lowers dopamine I'm not sure if you would want to take another drug that raises it.

A common side effect of SSRI's is higher prolactin levels. This usually results in lowered dopamine, which is responsible for a lot of the sexual disfunction people experience.

I know one function of prolactin is to produce breast milk in women. Another function I know of is it prolongs the refractory period for men after ejaculation. I'm sure there are a number of other functions of prolactin but I am unsure of them at this point.

I do not know what "dangers" are involved.

The amisulpride acts like an antidepressant at low doses, not an antpsychotic. It is a dopamine antagonist. It is known to increase prolactin and ther are a few different medications to take to combat that. I am told that bromocriptine would not be good for my needs in this case as it would counteract the Amisulpride.

I need to find another drug.

The reason I said antipsychotic was because they act as dopamine antagonists as well hence the parallel.

I know that amisulpride is not used primarily for that purpose though.
