Ativan vs Xanax---help

Posted by woolav on September 22, 2004, at 19:18:12

I am wondering if ativan is stronger than xanax? I was taking 2 mg of xanax for years, pdoc wanted me off of it, so she put me on klonopin. I got depressed from it. So, now she put me on ativan. But I am going from 3mg a day of klonopin to 1.5mg daily of ativan. Whats up?? Is this going to do anything for my anxiety? Is it stronger than xanax or klon??? Im confused.........

Ss

FIrst thing, I don't know if I am right, but I think the proper conversion for Klon to Ativan is .5 of Klon= 1mg of Ativan. It sounds like yours is reversed and therefore may cause more anxiety. That is definitely worth checking. Second, Ativan is the only benzo I have been on that is good for anxiety, but doesn't overly sedate me.

Are you taking an AD? I cant remember.

hmmm...ativan gave me a kinda high and eurphoria. i found it very mentally addictive.
And i found it did make me depressed.

Klonopin hasn't made me depressed at all.

Klonopin doesn't seem to have any high or euphoria type feeling at all.

I just seem to find my self talking a little more, smiling a little more. Im able to answer the phone, talk to strangers......and all the other SP things i could do before.
I dont know if i want to be on it long term. though.

I guess the key is to fix my social problems while klonopin makes it easier for me.
Once they are resolved go off it.

Woolav I wish you all the best and hope you find the right med.

This might help...

Maybe since this is a switch --- a lower starting dose is being used by your doc with plans to advance as tolerated ??? I have only used Ativan briefly and found it very sedating. Klonopin is my Godsend. I hope you work it out and find a treatment that is workable for you.

Even for a benzo-naive person, 1.5 mg/day of Ativan is too little. Despite what the charts say, it is about one fourth the strenght of Xanax.

My guess is that you might need at least 3 mg/day of Ativan, and likely more.

Ativan feels "nicer" than Xanax, though, so you'll "know" when you've reached the right level.
