Wellbutrin and Prozac combo

Posted by greyson on September 14, 2004, at 23:25:08

Hi. I've stumbled across this board and feel like I might get some good feedback and personal experiences. I'm manic depressive and my Dr. put me on Wellbutrin-xl. I can deal with remembering my dreams and strange sleep patterns because its better than before but the thing is (and this is way bad), its taken away my manic phases and I just can't motivate myself to get very much done. I'm also crashing on my days off (depressed, over sleeping and SO TIRED). He wants to try me on Effexor alone but I'm thinking of asking him to add Prozac to the Wellburtin instead because it really has done some good. Any advice? Please?
Thank you.

Hi:
I can NOT see if you've been on any of mood-stabilizer, because you didn't mention in your post, here. However, as seeing your Bipolar(manic depression), I believe you've been on.

In regard to 'depressive side' of Bipolar, I read that Symbyax(the combination of Zyprexa and Prozac in one capsule) is truly good. I mentioned this to my pdoc. at my last appt. due to still 'nagging' depression sometime lingering on my stressful days. However, my pdoc. said that I've been on ALREADY Zyprexa 5 mg. and then NO need of this. Also, I had a bad history of taking SSRIs, Zoloft labelled me 'Bipolar' when at first my pdoc. put the Zoloft in his initial diagnose which I had 'unipolar'/depression. Effexor made me 'racing heart' that almost made me a trip to the ER. All of this incidences on SSRIs, my pdoc. never thinks I'm a good candidate on any of SSRIs. However, in your case, you seem already having an experience of SSRIs, Prozac.
BTW, without a mood-stabilizer, if you're going to take any of SSRIs, you'll get 'manic' really bad, then be cautious!

That being said, I've also been on WB sr and fairly doing well on this med. along with two more A.D.(one med., I trying to tapering off gradually tho').

As to your question, WB xl and Prozac combo., I'm NOT quite sure, ... but if you've been quite successful on any of SSRIs, then in my guess, you can. However, you may need to talk to your pdoc. before taking this combo., due to some 'bad' interactions to worry about.

Hi Happy girl. Thanks so much for your reply.
I've just started on meds. I've never been on anything before. As I said, the Wellbutrin has done a lot of good for me, its really taken away that "edginess" but I can't deal with not having the mania and being sleepy and tired ALL the time. I know everyones different but I have heard some good things about this combo, I guess I just wanted to gather more info before I suggested it to my Doc.
Thanks again.

Hi:
Wellbutrin is not really anti-depressant to take in the first place, ... rather 'add-on' anti-depressant. In my case, I got WB after having complained about ADD which was brought on by the depressive side of Bipolar. Then, I totally agree with Prozac theory. You certainly need a 'REAL' anti-depressant to combat your depression, such as 'fatigue' and 'lack of energy.' Besides Pozac, Effexor is one of the best A.D.s for Bp depression.

If any other questions you need to ask, please let me know.

Hi,

I have been on PROZAC 100mg a day for 6 months to combat OCD. It worked well at first, but isn't anymore. I added wellbutrin a month ago - 300mg a day, to try to get relief from my depression. It hasn't helped much, but I read that I might
have to go up to 450mg a day. Right now I'm switching over to lexapro to try to help the OCD (It worked before). At the same time I will taper off the Prozac. Anyway, I read that wellbutrin blocks the enzyme that gets rid of SSRIS, so when you take it you have to reduce your SSRI DOSAGE, or atleast be aware of the drug interactions. Once I get stabilized on lexapro I will go up to 450mg of wellbutrin to try and clear up the depression

Note: the wellbutrin has really helped my smoking. In that sense it saved my life from lung cancer, etc.

Bye,

Dave
