Withdrawal from geodon

Posted by marie44 on May 19, 2004, at 20:07:30

I have been taking geodon for around a year and it has helped stabilize my moods but it has completely zapped my creativity. I have decided to stop taking geodon with the help of my doctor. I am also taking prozac and xanax. My primary diagnosis is major depression with a secondary diagnosis of bipolar illness. The geodon has basically prevented me from cycling into major depressive episodes. I did not take my dose of geodon 2 nights ago and I am not suppposed to take it tonight and then I will take it again on Thursday and then stop taking it completley on Friday. I felt pretty bad the 1st night that I did not take it, had trouble sleeping, chills and other anxiety related symptoms. Can anyone out there tell me about their experience coming off of geodon and has the medication affected your creativity and spirituality?

Yeah, I felt a real spiritual deadness on Geodon. Creativity... yeah kinda muffled. I'm currently going off Geodon and feel happy to get back to my former level of activity/motivation/spiritual insight. I've had no bad side effects yet from withdrawal but it's only day one.

I found that when I first started on Geodon, it had a very positive effect. It even helped me get a handle on my housework (previously elusive). Then I kept getting to a point of "let down" where I felt I needed more to stay in good spirits. But as the dosage increased there was not a corresponding raising of spirits (mood). It took me several months to realize that Geodon is not the silver bullet I've been searching for.

I suffer from depression -- have been taking
Zoloft before, during and will continue after Geodon. Geodon gave me a tempory boost, but it looks like the ride is over. I realized this when I forgot a dose and actually felt good and clear headed. I only wish I could just go cold turkey, but I have a family that needs me sane (mostly).

I was taking 80mg am and 80mg pm and was off geodon in 1 1/2 months. Felt great off the stuff!

I tried to get off of geodon but I felt panicky and high strung and then was feeling depressed during the day. I take it before bed and it has definitely hampered my communication with spirit as well as my ability to write creatively. The problem is that I am taking it to counteract my hypmania that can lead to very self destructive behavior. I decided to stay on it because I am very stable right now but it is disheartening to know that you will always have to take medication. Marie

Dear Marie,
New medications are available every year. Something new may come along that suits you better.

Also, don't forget that Geodon is only one of a number of drugs in this classification. Perhaps your Dr. can help you find one that does not have this side effect.
