Help! Chemist, anyone re: xyprexa

Posted by malthus on August 23, 2004, at 14:20:29

My doctor has put me on 5mg. xyprexa a day and I'm unclear about what this drug is supposed to do. How is it going to help me? (currently also on 112mg effexor, 125mg lamictal.)

hello there, chemist here....i am taking the liberty of asking for a consult here. zyprexa is an atypical antipsychotic used off-label for mood stabilization. many people report success in that department, although there are side-effects that are almost universally reviled and unavoidable with this drug, weight-gain being the most prominent. your 5 mg qd dose is about the lowest, although the 2.5 mg tabs are available. i would expect it to be mildly sedating for you and that the side-effects - most common at higher doses - would be minimal. however, please do get the input of other posters, in that i have not taken this drug, and can give you the quick-and-dirty, as above. you might want to repost with a bit more info in re: your diagnosis, as that will help the others make some more helpful statements....all the best, chemist

My diagnosis is Bipolar II and treatment resistant depression with anxiety. I thought the lamictal would cover the mood stabilization but I don't find the 5mg. of Xprexa mildly sedating so I don't really understand why she has me on this medication. I take .25mg. of Clonazepam a day for anxiety (some days .5mg.for real bad days.) Doc asked me what I thought would help me with anxiety as the school year is about to start; I'm a teacher. I said Darvon jokingly and then Xanax but she doesn't like to prescribe Xanax, so I said Xyprexa because that has helped me before with depression/anxiety but I had to stop it because I gained weight. Is Xyprexa used at this low a dose for depression/anxiety that the Clon. may not cover?
P.S. I'm also on 112.mg daily of Effexor; I'm weaning off it because it has not helped me whatsoever.

The Zyprexa should indeed work for these problems but please be patient- give it a good 4 weeks

All the best!

Hi,

I took Zyprexa when I was at my lowest and only when I was feeling really bad, I had to take 10mg in order to feel it's effects property, it completely stopped my Suicidal thoughts and made me a new person the next day, I could concentrate and felt normal again, also made me eat like mad which was a good thing at the time.

I refused to take it on a daily basis though because I didn't want to stay on it for ever and just tried to use it as a relexant more than anything else. Zyprexa gave me almost instant relief from feeling unbearable.

~~~Thanks Denise! Question for Chemist: Is it ok to take Xyprexa on an "as-needed" basis as Denise posts above? Or is it a med that needs to stay in your system to be really effective? My
psych. has me on 5mg. daily and it is helping to some extent. Denise felt relief at 10mg. I will have to ask my psych. in a few weeks if that's an ok dose to get maximum relief but she's laid up in bed from shoulder surgery; she took a spill riding her bike on vacation:-( I of course won't start taking that dose until I talk to her but still would appreciate your knowledge about Xyprexa.
Thanks as always for your expert advice.
Best,
malthus
P.S. sorry to babble on but do you know anything about the reports that Xyprexa messes with blood sugar levels? I've been seeing those cheesy lawyers on tv telling you to join some kind of class action lawsuit. This would be such a shame if it's taken off the market.~~~
hello there, chemist here...as per: prn dosing, that is a decision for you and your doctor to make to see if it is effective. adult-onset diabetes has been associated with this drug - and many other unpleasant things - and although as i have stated before that this is way out of my even peripheral knowledge, what i have read is that the incidence is largely correlated with dose, length of treatment, and preexisting disposition for metabolic maladies relating to processing sugars. all the best, chemist
