Wellbutrin 300mg, lexapro 10mg+ and anxiety

Posted by MedStudentSouth on July 27, 2004, at 21:02:01

Hello all... Having found many postings concerning the differences between lexapro and wellbutrin I'd like to give an account of my own experiences. While having been moderately depressed last fall I started taking 300mg of wellbutrin. After the 2nd week or so, I found myself feeling paranoia, experiencing obsessive thoughts, and thinking acutely of suicide. Yes... Wellbutrin definitely had a negative effect on my mood. B/C of the fact that it was also prescribed to me to treat mild symptoms of ADD, I decided to stick with it (I was in the process of completing my first year of medical school). After having 3 months of hell, I decided to lower my wellbutrin dose to 150mg and to add on 20mg of celexa a day. My negative symptoms went away and I began to sleep better and to come out of my depression. Once I had to study for finals, however, I upped the wellbutrin back to 300 and switching to 10mg lexapro (basically same compound as celexa). I've been mostly great. I think that the brain definitely needs a good bit of time to get adjusted to wellbutrin, esp if one suffers from GAD.

I'm currently starting a relationship. This has me on edge, I must say... Sometimes the anxiety is horrible.. but I've upped my lex to 20 mg/day. This takes the edge off. I'm definitely medicated though. Is there anyone out there who's taking both medications as well? It seems to be a rather common cocktail.

Hi:
I have no experience as to 'Lexapro,' however I've been WB sr for the past three years or so. In my personal experience, WB sr is rather good for 'ADD' with a bit depressive property. Then, I totally understand your experience 'in hellish feelings' with WB sr 300 mg. Also, the 300 mg. WB sr is quite 'mass' dosage as seeing you sound like no past experience in AD and other psycho.-meds. Normally, WB sr prescribed after formal ADs, such as the one which you're on, due to 'weaker effectiveness' in dep.

In my guess, ... the reason why your pdoc. rxed WB sr in the first place is, as your quote, for 'ADD,' however it seems also he/she was precautious enough NOT to aggreviate your depression. Because, other stimulants, such as Ritalin, Addedal(sp?) and the like make the depression get worse, ... not always tho'.

In regard to 'GAD,' ... it is a part of 'depression,' however sometimes WB sr makes the thing/anxiety aggrevated, ... including me, due to some 'stimulant' effect.

I have NO good idea whether Celexa alleviate Anxiety-part of your depression, since I never use the Celexa. However if your anxiety getting worse due to the relationship or any other reasons, then you may need to ask your pdoc. for more appropriate AD or any other med. for 'Anxiety.'

Hi there medstudent -
I take the same combo of wellbutrin and lexapro (plus some other meds). Lexapro initially made me very anxiety riddden, that faded slowly, but i always felt like i was in a medicated haze. The addition of wellbutrin countered that symptom and the combonation has been good for me.

It's hard to say what will work on some people compared to others. Some people get lethargic on wellbutrin, others get anxious. Sometimes the combonatioon of two different SSRI's can mitigate symptoms you're having from just one.

Sorry I can't be of more help :(
