The gasping part reminds me of one of the symptoms of Sleep Apnea which can be a result of HPA axis dysorganization:
http://www.sleepfoundation.org/publications/sleepap.cfm
Many antidepressant meds can aggravate sleep apnea:
http://www.endotext.org/adrenal/adrenal31/adrenal31.htm
A physician certified in sleep disorders can do a sleep study to confirm. Insurance usually pays as they are pricey. Getting the right mask and setting is important and may require several tries.
I've been on a CPAP (the machine which pumps air to the mask) for 6 months and feel my sleep is somewhat better. Hasn't fixed the whole problem (I have Fibromyalgia and depression), but I can function better without practically falling asleep at the wheel every day.
You don't know how precious a good night's sleep is until you haven't had one in awhile. Hoping for good ZZZZZs in your future.

I didn't snore either, but the sleep study showed that I had almost 200 episodes of apnea! What I've learned is that "classical symptoms" often don't fit many people. I'd read up more on it if I were you, just in case.

nope defintly that.. my physc gave it to me.. she is so crap took a year to see her she gave me zoloft (first and only visit) after me telling her that ssri's causes my bp to go up and hrt rate etc.. the doc took me of it, then after another year of waiting she gave me fluanxol and i took it onece and i was manic.. same thing happened to me when i took reboxatine.. erm i just feel deranged , feels as if my brain is dying.. its as if i am wearing another persons pair of glasses, i feel all strange, i am frightened (maybe lack of sleep) i havent slept much this week bed at 12 up at 7 ( i am usually a 12 hr sleeper) and then last night i had wat i can explain as a strange night .. as if someone was there i felt sort of paralized awake but asleep and i felt paralized !! i usually get this i nthe day when i nap if i am tired (since i was a kid) now i am worrying about it... i feels all dizzy and strange (must be anxiey) i need constant reasurance, i was waiting to get my daughter earlier from school and it felt as if i was wobbling, i felt all out of balance kind of thing, everyone looked strange kind of twinkling.. i cant afford to feel this way.. i went to see another doctor few weeks ago he re refered me bk to the physc (probably another years wait) she is the only consultant in my county.. BUT i am going to go there tommorrow and ask to be refered to another one in the other county ( theres 6) sod it i will travel. why do i feel like this?

>Fluanxol is nothing like Reboxetine, Fluanxol does nearly the opposite to what Reboxetine & Effexor does. It seems like a very popular choice for anxious depressives in the U.K.
Have you tried looking in at Psycho-Babble Psychology? http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/psycho/
You are pretty much out of options as far as drugs go, CBT or ECT might be better options for you.Cheers,

that's sleep paralysis, it's more likely to occur with sleep deprivation and anxiety and is harmless, but unpleasant and unsettling. These experiences are often accompanied by hallucinations which are nightmare-like. The only way to reduce the frequency of these episodes, as far as i know, besides taking an antidepressant (TCA's are the best for this, but you can't tolerate them) is to make sure you get enough sleep throughout the week. Another option would be to try the very mild anxiolytic Buspar (buspirone). The main reason I take it is to prevent sleep paralysis. You will probably know after the first dose if you find it calming or agitating.

I changed my Remeron for Nortriptyline to try & combat apathy & to go with metformin. I'm already thinking about trying something else, possibly Sinequan as Nort is not giving me the perfect beauty sleep that Remeron gives me.

> can u describe what happens to you?I would sometimes hear someone opening the window in my apt. and break in... I would try to move to stop them or escape but I'd be completely paralyzed.... this was AWFUL and would happen almost every night. Sometimes I would get this 'rushing sensation' in my head and confused noises, I would be screaming until I woke up (but in the days when I had a gf she said she heard nothing). Once I actually thought I had an epileptic attack in my sleep, and I told myself I would call an ambulance when the seizure stopped; then I woke up, out of breath but motionless and in the same position I had gone to sleep in (I had imagined I was writhing on the floor).
Lately it's happened a lot less, especially since I upped the dosage of nortriptyline (a TCA) and started taking 15 mg buspar at night. Also i think taking Provigil (a medication for narcolepsy) has helped. The last time it happened, I saw something crawling on the ceiling, but I didn't get the auditory hallucinations or painful feelings in my body, and it was more like the normal images you might see when you drift off to sleep. hope this helps
