Does anyone know anything about using dexamphetamine to activate depressed people (in conjunction with other antidepressants)?
Thanks,
Sarah

I know that it is used for exactly that reason. However, sometimes the effect doesn't last for long. I have a friend who was taking it for a month and then it stopped working.

I think they're planning to use it (after stablilising the dexamphetamine dose) by adding reboxetine.
Not sure if that'd make a difference to the length of the effect- still, my friend has been basically depressed every day for the last several years, and he has been actually happy the last few days.
Even if it doesn't last, it's been good to have him OK for a change.

Dex was orginally made to treat depression, along with obesity back in 1937 i belive. Popular for a while till the 60's when abuse started getting bad.
But i agree it's an effective stimulant anti-depressant. Usually doctor prescribe it after failed trials with antidepressants, and it depends on the doctor's experiece. An experienced doc that's older may be familar with presrbiing dexedrine after failed trials, and usally its combined with an antidepressant at the same time.
It is simple to abuse, this is why it is put on the waiting list to be presbribed after everything else. But, usally people take it responsibly.
Hope you find a solution, good luck.

> SarahLike the other posters said, dexedrine (or Ritalin, or, occasionally, Adderall) can be used for depression. Usually the doc will use these as "augmenting" agents; they jumpstart antidepressants and help kill off lethargy. But..they're Schedule II, so a lot of docs will try many, many drugs before the thought of stimulant augmentation even pops up. If you ind a doc who will do it (and is GOOD at it), stimulant augmentation can not only help with depression, but also with anxiety (odd, but true) and, obviously, concentration/cognitive problems associated with depression. If your doc won't go for a full-fledged stimulant, she or he may be willing to try Provigil.
