My sleep doctor has talked to me about taking Xyrem for severe insomnia but I need more feedback. Presently I am alternating Ambien one night, Sonata the next. The Sonata has ceased to work, and I feel like I have Ambien rebound every other night. He told me to add one half Ambien to the Sonata on the Sonata nights, but that did not help me when I tried. I am having serious health problems and the lack of sleep has made everything worse. There are some negative things written about Xyrem here; I am wondering if anyone has had a positive experience?

I'm all for Xyrem. My doctor has finally prescribed it to me. It's much more natural and just an overall good drug for many things, including sleep.

Do you suffer any side effects?

Not at my therapuetic dose (I use it for anxiety and depression) The only downside is the half life is extremely short so multile daily doses is usually nessasary. I read somewhere there is research to extend the half-life or lengthen the "effive time". It's also expensive, especially considering it's extremely simple molecular structure and simplicity to make. The price is a biproduct of US drug laws and greed.
