hi
my pdoc wants me on abilfy for BPII. I heard that antipsychotics can reduce ssri induced sweating....has anyone noticed anything

Actually I am on effexor xr 37.5mg which is the bare minimum for me. all ssri's make me sweat- alot. especially on my face
I am also on wellbutrin 150mg and lamactil 200mg for BPII.
i really dont know what to do. i'm thinkingg of stopping allmeds. i'm so sick of all the side effects.thanks

Hey! It's sad, but true, that even the atypical antipsychotics interfere with your ability to sweat. I took abilify for a while, and it wasn't that big a deal, really...I just drank plenty of water and avoided situations in which I might get overheated. I took a couple of different SSRIs during my Abilify stint, and it still wasn't too much of an issue. That said: if it concerns you, talk to your doc about it. Antipsychotics have come a long way since Thorazine, but they're still kinda rough, so you may want to see if you can try something else first. Especially with BP II, you may be able to stabilize with an anticonvulsant or lithium. If you go the AP route, be sure your doctor tells you WHY this is the best treatment, HOW LONG you can expect to be on it, and what dosages you can expect. Watch out for neuroleptic malignancy syndrome (NMS; rare, but potentially fatal) and akathisia during treatment...also be aware of any changes in movement, such as development of tics. (tardive dyskinesia is a potential side effect of AP therapy...it CAN be permanent, but can often be stopped if the AP is discontinued). Good luck!

I guess thats good news for me since I am currently oversweating on my meds.My pdoc wants me to add an antipsychotic for my moodswings. so maybe 2 things solved at once

I'm on Seroquel and 375 of Effexor XR and sweat like a pig even if I climb one set of stairs in a cold air conditioned building!!!! Should I bring this up to my doc??

Hi
I saw this a litle late...but had to answer anyway.
When I was on Prozac I had extremely bad side effects (movement problems, sleep problems...not mild but severe)
But I also stopped sweating when I was outside in warm weather or in the sun. I had heat stroke 6 times in one year beause the doctor said SSRI's did not cause sweating problems! I quit and have not had problem with sweating since.
I do, however, still have some movement problems that have not gone away.....RLS that is 24/7, shaking, muscle jerks (not as bad as before though), constant blinking and mouth movements. It has been 8 years since I stopped taking Prozac...and it is not getting better. I have given up on doctors...they have no answers except it souldn't be happening!

all that from prozac!!!! thats sounds awful.
i'm shocked!
i really really hope you find some relief soon. just shows how scary these drugs can be. and the docs just have to put their hands up because nobody can really explain why one would react so badly to a drug.
personally i am just dying to get off everything because of all these toxic effects.

Good for you!
That's the right goal...to be able to function without meds.
Like you said, meds are very scary. They do work wonders for many people...but people still have to be aware of all the risks involved.
When they test meds, they only get results based on the individuals they test....and that does not include you or me....and thousands of other people. Drugs used to treat depression, anxiety, panic, OTC, ED etc. have only been on the market a very short time. All the effects are not known yet. They are learning something new everyday.
But when you have no other option, and the meds work....it is worth a few side effects.
Still...being able to function without them would be wonderful.
