new to Lexapro--quick question

Posted by filmguy on June 15, 2004, at 13:03:14

Hello. I started on Lexapro one week ago (10 mg). So far, side-effects are not too bad. A little nausea, fatigue, etc. Basically bearable. This is the first medication I have tried for depression/anxiety.

My question is this--I think I am already noticing some relief, but I am SO preoccupied with whether it is working that my judgement is clouded; the focus of my anxiety/worry has partially shifted to whether or not I am feeling better. Has anyone experienced this? If so, once the meds truly start working, do issues like this clear up to some extent?

I am optimistic about this drug, but could use a little advice/reassurance on this front. Thanks.

do you have obsessive thoughts? you said you're extremely preoccupied with whether the drug is working - did you worry/obsess about other things before you started taking the lex?

also, if its only been a week so far, you need to wait a while longer before you feel any real difference.

Thanks so much for your quick response! I am definitely going to wait it out (as patiently as possible) to see how effective it is.

I did have obsessive/irrational thoughts (guilt, self-villainization...a mess, really) that drove me to distraction. The result was anxiousness and depressive symptoms. I still experience these thoughts to some extent, but am hoping they will subside with continued treatment (including therapy).

Hi, I've been on Lexapro for about 2 years now. I take 40mg. Just be patient it takes about 4-6 weeks for the medication to reach its theraputic effects. If you are not feeling better after this amount of time. Then you can adjust the dosage. If the dosage does not help then you can always try another med.

Hope this helps

Hi! I also started Lexapro one week ago, 10 mg a day. I also think that I can feel a difference at this point but still find myself acutely aware of the situations where I would normally feel panic, waiting to see if the medication works or not. So far, I'm doing ok with the panic and coping with the side effects (drowsy and foggy feeling).
I hope that you will continue to post here, especially since we can compare notes! :)

Hi! I am on day 10 of 10mg lexapro - first thing I have ever taken for anxiety. I have noticed that where I would normally start to feel an anxiety attack coming on, I'm not. I don't like the foggy feeling I have after I take it. I take mine in the morning, so when I wake up until I take it, I feel more "normal" and then after I take it, that foggyness and the "yawns" kick in. I do like not worrying about having an attack. I am a big hypochondriac so I am hoping I won't obsess over my health from this drug!

I have noticed that my right foot/lower leg does feel kind of dead. Not like asleep and tingly, but just heavy and out of sorts/numb. Has anyone had this? It may be in my head but of course I think maybe my right arm feels that too (I am always thinking I have MS) - so not sure if that is a side effect. Let me know if you have felt that! :)
Thanks!

i have been on 20 for 5 months. it will take a while to kick completly in. give it time and your mind will clear. the yawing stuck around a long time with me, but finally went away after 3 months. dont get frusterated, just let the med do its job. good luck to all!
