What is the diffrence between Wellbutrin XR and XL

Posted by twinmom on June 4, 2004, at 15:08:19

I have previosly taken the Wellbutrin XR (it's been about 1 year ago) I am currently on Risperdal(1mg), Zoloft(150) and depakote (200mg) and recently diagnosed bipolar as opposed to the depression diagnosis I have had for 9 years. I am still not sure I have ever had a manic period - but as my depression has never really gone away I am open to new theories...

Anyway pdoc added 150 mg wellbutrin XL for energy and sex drive problems and I was wondering if it acts the same as the XR? Any thoughts or experiences?

Sorry I meant between SR and XL

Hi,

I've been on Wellbutrin before and it worked really well. As far as I know the only difference between SR and XL is that SR is taken twice a day and is a bigger pill whereas XL is once a day and a very tiny pill. That mattered to me because I have an enlarged thyroid from hypothyroiditis and it makes it hard to swallow round pills unless they are tiny. Plus, with once a day dosing, you are less likely to accidentally skip a dose. I got the same effect from SR as XL, but didn't have to practically choke to get the XL down!

Good luck to you.

Caper

SR is short for sustained release. People usually take it twice a day, for instance, 2 x 150 mg/day.

XL is short for xtra long release or something like that. It is even slower releasing and is designed to be taken once a day.

The SR type is now being produced by the generic companies, and their version is called bupropion SR. The XL version, while offering the convenience of once a day dosing, is more of an attempt by GlaxoSmithKline to hold on to some of their Wellbutrin profits IMO. It is possible that the XL version may work better for some people than the SR; although, I have also heard people say the opposite.

XL: once a day. expensive: not prefered, no generic

SR: 2-3 times a day. cheeper: prefered list and generic available

I was on XR 300 mg a day...200 mg in the morning and 100 mg at night....now I am on 450 mg XL...once a day and I LOVE IT. They are three teeny tiny pills (smaller than the 300 mg...which you probably know if you are on 150 mg because mine are 150 mg and I take three of them,)

I like taking it once a day because I used to wake up and freak out at night worrying if I took my last pill or not.

It has helped me lose weight (yippy!!) and I havc great side effects w/sex. Good luck!!!
