Cybercafe (or any one else) I need a decent UK Doc

Posted by TheOutsider on May 12, 2004, at 17:13:54

Cybercafe thanks for responding to my earlier post.

You said you new a decent doctor in London, but that you thought it might be to far for me to travel.
The answer is that I would travel any were in southen England to get to a good doctor.

To put things in perspective I traveled from York to Bath and back in a day to see a doctor!
Since my family live in Cambridge London is very easy for me to get to.

well back then i didn't know what i know now (so it was harder to evaluate exactly HOW good these guys were... this was 4 years ago remember) BUT i do remember two doctors (one NHS one private) who seemed quite good... (i was very impressed to be perscribed lamictal back in 2000!) if you want to email me at pbad2001@yahoo.com and put a title that will let me know it's not spam i will be happy to answer any questions i can ...

btw i have an incredably good doctor right now, but i STILL had to read psychobabble to make the final move to switch from zyprexa to abilify which has made all the difference in the world... plus figure out how much benzo dose is right for me (how much is too little? how much is too much? it's a tricky question...)

so i'd say any doc that is aware of topics discussed on psychobabble and can explain differences of opinion thoroughly is someone worth seeing....

my doc seems to know more than everyone on psychobabble BUT that says A LOT because i think the top 5 guys here probably know more than 98% of docs out there (who have no time to catch up on recent trends they're too busy treating patients all day, drive-thru style)

My psychiatrist in London is wonderful.. He is great he really is (and yes, I am incredibly lucky).. but he's NHS and if you don't live in the area theres no chance of seeing him (I live in the area and it still took a fight to see this one!)

I'll see what I can come up with next week when I have a big department of health meeting (even MP for Health will be there.. ah, I'm terrified!).. A very good psychiatrist I know in Reading will be there and might be able to suggest a good doc you can see private (or psych I know might be able to see you).. I know quite a few very good docs, but very few actually practice anymore which is soooo annoying.

Whats you diagnoses / symptoms?? Alot of the best docs specialise so that would be helpful to know

Nikki

Hey Cybercafe
Thanks for reply, I sent an email.

Thanks also to Nikki!
In answer to what my problems are
I think depression, social anxiety and general worrying, not really anxious though.
I'm also possibly ADD, certainly have a lot of the symptoms.
Haven't responded to any SSRIs or other serotonin drugs. I think my problem is at least partly dopamine based. Didn't respond to maclobemide either.

I'd like to try an MAOI but there so hard to get prescribed in the UK, especially in decent doses.
I basicly have no confidence in myself at the moment.

Professor Farmer is an authority on bipolar. She works from the Affective Disorders Unit at Maudsley. I don't know about locals, but the function of the unit is to give evaluations that last acouple of hours, not extended treatment. Still, seems a great idea and may lead to other pdocs.
