Hello,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to become addicted to Zyprexa?? Is it possible to become tolerant to its effects? The reason I ask is I have heard that its a Benzodiazepine anti-psychotic. Does it have the same addiction/tolerance problems as with the other benzos such as Valium??
Also is it useful for social phobia and if so, at what dosage?
I know nothing about Zyprexa so any information would be very helpful. I'm on Amisulpride at the moment for anxiety but its not helping, I'm going to ask my doctor about Zyprexa.

Well lets see. I've been taking zyprexa since '98. The dose has only gone down over the years as I improve. I started on 15 mg, and now on 7.5 mg. I've never built a tolerance to it, just a dependance. It helps me sleep, kills anxiety, keeps me sane. I guess. I would have to say it is the best anti-psychotic I ever took. I tried risperdal, Abilify, depakote, and others that I don't know. Can't say I ever felt like I wanted or needed more than I was taking, even if I had it.
I don't know if it is good for social phobia, but it got me out of the house when I use to fear seeing people.
Zyprexa is awsome for anxiety!

I don't believe that Zyprexa is connected with addiction in any way, however a person will exhibit withdrawal symptoms if taken off Zyprexa like any other AD or AP. It works wonders correcting delusions, auditory hallucinations, and other active and passive psychotic symptoms. It is also used for anxiety, depression, social withdrawal and insomnia. My son takes 20mg a day for schizophrenia (undifferentiated type). What has really helped him come out of his shell though is Zoloft.

Daniel is right. Zyprexa is 'not' addictive. More or less, I just need it. I have no problem stoping it. Just that the simptoms of my illness come back. I stoped cold turky for many months at a time, a few times.

Hello,
When taken regularly, antipsychotics tend to increase the number of dopamine receptors in the brain, as the brain compensates for the dopamine-blocking action of AP's.
Going off an AP suddenly can cause a "dopamine overload" that can cause all sorts of weird symptoms.The solution is to ALWAYS taper when going off an AP. That will let your brain get used to the normal (unmedicated) amounts of dopamine stimulation.
