I am getting rally excited about pregabalin which will be released in europe in about 1 month. It is supposed to have similar effectiveness with the benzos for anxiety w/o tolerance and withdrawl. If you go to pubmed.com and search for pregabalin and anxiety you will find tons of studies that compare pregabalin with klonopin etc. and most of them show same efficacity w/o the drawbacks. It's about time that a "true" anti anxiety med comes out, since the benzos have been the only real option up to now, but their tolerance makes them anoying choice to use.
Pregabalin is supposed to be released in us towards the end of this year. However, you might be able to get it from europe in 1 month.
Any comments?

What is your source on the timing of the Pregabalin (Lyrica) release in Europe?

I read it an some business review of phizer's product/earnings ratings for this year. I saw it on a couple of web sites. If you search in google carefully for "pregabalin release europe" or for "pregabalin lyrica" you should bump into them. lyrica is the brand name it's supposedly gonna have.

Isn't pregabalin mainly an extended release gabapentin? I've had the best antianxiety relief from gabapentin (Neurontin), but tolerance develops pretty quickly, and pregabalin was supposed to address this, if I remember correctly.

No pregabalin and neurontin are completely different drugs. You can think of pregabalin as a MAOI but ony for GABA. By the way, neurontin does NOT build tolerance (maybe it just "pooped" out for you, which in can happen in some people if your brain gets some way of going "around" the drugs actions and returns to it normal (or abnormal) previous functioning.

jerimycoplo,
your information is incorrect. pregablin works the exact same way as neurontin does (though it is a different chemical structure - so it has added benefits etc) however it is NOT a MAO inhibitor of gaba-transamine which breaks down gaba in the brain. It works like neurontin by modulating calcium channels. Read the posts above in which the characteristics of both neurontin and pregablin are generally expliained by both me and chemist. and yes neurontin has documented tolerance. A good resource you can use is medline, or pubmed.

From what I have read on pubmed , pregabalin is going to be alot more effective then neurontin for anxiety and no tolerance effects were detected with pregabalin.
Whether it is chemicallly related to neurontin or not is a different story. Neurontin never did anything for me.jc
